Maintaining "Select which icons appear on taskbar"

Is there a trick for getting Windows to remember these enabled items?

I routinely need to go there to reinstate the conditions I previously set.

I am not sure if you mean the actual taskbar where you would use pin to taskbar fora shortcut OR the notification area of the taskbar where you would use settings
rght click taskbar - click taskbar settings
notification area - select which icons appears on taskbar
and click to turn on or off

also see on the right of ther wiindow in settings - pin to taskbar
and also see on main window - system icons on or off

Also when you have it set as you wish do not forget to lock
Locking the taskbar is handy to make sure it remains how you set it up. Unlock the taskbar later when you want to make changes or change its location on the desktop.

This "taskbar notification area" is not controlled by "Lock the Taskbar"

It appears that regardless of whether you have enabled any given app in "Select which icons appear on taskbar", if you manually move it from the taskbar notification area to the "show hidden icons" menu, the related setting in "Select which icons appear on taskbar" is simultaneously toggled off.

ok, but will that also allow me to pick and choose only those icons that I want?

Yes, IIRC. Maybe I switched the one's off I didn't care for first. I don't currently see any I don't want and see all I do want.

It's easy enuf' for you to just test this

Yeh, I should have explained better. It's really all or nothing, I have 13 icons enabled. Far too many to have in that area all the time. I was holding out the shallow hope that there was a workaround.

    I never suggested it was

as I said it was unclear to me from your opening post whether you were talking about icons on the taskbar - pinned to the taskbar or the items in the notifcation area.

    I suggest you follow this
Hide or Show Notification Area Icons on Taskbar in Windows 10
and if it still does not work try this
Reset Notification Area Icons in Windows 10
