    How to take control

    Hi all,
I know, think, guess there is an easy way to do this but my memory, like the ol' grey mare, aint what it used to be.
When I want to transfer a file, say to a USB stick, I get the little box with a message that I need admin rights to do this.
No biggie, I click it and away we go but how do I take control of all my files.....in fact the whole damn computer....it is mine after all
    Ta,
    H

    Hello lffoar ,

It's a security feature and I'd recommend against bypassing it as you'll potentially break your PC depending how you go about this.

What folder where you copying these files from? That's a factor in whether you see that message or not. If they are your documents, pictures, etc, from within your own profile, you should not be getting that prompt.

Thanks for that. Wouldn't you know it, haven't had one occasion since I posted yesterday. I hadn't thought about the security aspect so yep, I'll leave the buggar alone.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect This is a good skill to learn. Then if you break something or your PC gets corrupted, etc, you can quickly restore your backup to the point in time when you made the backup.

    H,

This is highly unusual. The next time it happens, please post the full source path & a screenshot of the dialog so the message can be read.
    - I assume it is not every file copy, which would indicate something up with the USB rather than the source.

"Editor’s Note: Trying to gain ownership and control over important Windows files and folders can lead to instability or even a complete system crash. Even if you know what you are doing, it is highly recommended that you create a restore point or completely backup your system before trying anything which could potentially destroy your Windows install." from the above link.

So Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Thanks Steve, I learned my lesson, (the hard way as usual), a while back and now have a Macrium image on a separate HDD and update it regularly.

You're most welcome and others paying attention should say thank you too.

Unfortunately, it's not clear to many that it's really easy to frog up Windows if you change the wrong file/folder permission.

Good point Denis, I tried several flash drives to see if I could isolate perhaps a "rogue" but wouldn't y' know it, when you want something to show up it doesn't. Haven't had one occurrence since my initial post
Think I'll take the advice given and just leave it alone.
    Ta to all, subject closed.
