    Start up issues.

    Hi

Having a bit of a nightmare starting my HP Pavilion 15 on windows 10.

It gets to the logo screen and stays on the spinning circle.

I’ve tried various F keys to get into safe mode after hitting the power button but nothing happens and it goes back through to the logo/circle.

I can get the troubleshooting options open via ESC on startup. When I try to restore it says the C drive is corrupt. I’ve checked and repaired for errors and it says it was successful.

However, I still can’t go back to a restore point as it tells me the C drive is corrupt (still, despite saying it was repaired). I also cannot boot from the start (after the repair) as it just goes back to the logo/spinning circle.

I’ve just tried to restore again and got the same corrupt message. However, after I scan again it says no errors were found. But I cannot restore from here still.

I do not have safe mode start up options in troubleshooting menu (which I have seen as an option elsewhere). I’m a bit stuck on what to try next. If anyone could help that would be great.

Managed to get restore running but it failed on two separate dates.

Trying to do a chkdsk /f via CMD but can’t get past the read only failure. Do the diskpart prompts but this fails to remove the write protect.

Thank you. Not sure of exact age and it still has the same hard disk. It’s a Pavillion 15 prob about 5-7 years old.

Currently running chkdsk c: /f/r/x to see if that brings up any problems. Currently in stage 4 looking for bad clusters and think it says 7+ hours left to go.

Frustrating, as if I could get into safe mode I could prob figure it out, but can’t find a safe mode route for the life of me.

I can’t access the internet to download a third party tool - is there any other way to back up to an external hard drive through the startup menu?

What third party tool you want to run?

I would say that your drive is dying.

HP computers has a diagnostic tool that can be launched from BIOS. Try it.

Thanks. No tool in particular, just read it can be done, but using a third party tool isn’t an option. Can it be done without logging in?

Is that the diagnostic tool for hardware? Currently going through the chkdsk scan.

If you run chkdsk c: /r it will check for bad sectors that is a hardware issue and can't be fixed.

In other words, if it finds bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc you need to replace the drive.

Have used many BX500 SSDs. They are cheap and fast. So far so good.
MX500 are a little better type.

Thanks again. Is there a way to backup the existing disk without logging into my user (as I canÂ’t find a way to do so in safe mode).

    Hello @Richkane,
    Welcome to TenForums.

If it was me, I would try and get ALL my data [ Personal Folders & Files etc ] off as soon as possible. The below is an excellent way to do this as it does NOT put any load [ well, minimal ] on the existing HDD.

     Linux Live USB / DVD

A Linux Live USB / DVD is a good emergency method of retrieving data from an otherwise UN-bootable drive or if you are having other drive difficulties.

    Basically . . .

[1] Download the Linux ISO - I always use Linux Mint although there are others available.
    [2] Create a Bootable USB/DVD [ media ] using Rufus for example => Rufus.
    [3] Boot the media.
[4] Copy the files from the OS to an external HDD/SSD or USB.

    > Download Linux Mint 20 Ulyana

    I hope this helps.
