    Thanks Paul.

Well, scan ended and said it found no problems. No further action required. So this whole thing is a complete mystery as to why I can’t log on.

A friend came to me with his wife laptop. He said she couldn't log in and she was entering the right password.
To be short, the profile was corrupted.
With a little trick I enabled the Administrator account, created a new user and then moved all data to the new use. Finally I deleted the corrupted user and disabled the Administrator account.

Thing is, I can’t get beyond the logo screen and spinning circle. Unless there’s another way of doing the above. Even the ESC startup menu is now stuck on the logo and “please wait” so I can’t go and retry restoring from an earlier date.

Thanks. Did a system quick test and it failed at the short dst check. Seems like my hard drive is knackered after all.

It's time to save your data.
Boot from a Linux USB drive and copy all your data to an external drive.

Thanks. Thankfully have most of it (my work) saved in Dropbox, just personal stuff and other things I need to get off.

I advise replacing the dying HDD with an SSD.

Two ways to help protect yourself from such a disaster:
    a. Monitor disk health with alerts when it degrades:
    Crystal Diskinfo (free)

    b. Routine and regular disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free/paid) to large enough external storage.
The very act of imaging verifies the integrity of the used area of imaged partitions.

Then you have a full backup, and compressed copies of partitions your can restore to the same or new disk - or even to a different PC.

Endlessly recommended. Such programs also let you create a bootable disk for recovery.
