    New Laptop

Hello,my new HP laptop is running Windows 10 in S Mode, I presume I will be offered Windows 11 via Win updates,do I need to come out of S Mode before updating to Win 11 or can I just install Win 11 whilst still in S Mode? Will I end up running Win 11 in S Mode if I don't come out of it prior to installing Win 11? Thanks

Hi, A quick Google search offers

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...b-93baebeebc85

    - which should help. Extract from that:

If l have Windows 10 in S mode, can I upgrade to Windows 11 and what edition would I have after l upgrade?

When you upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, the upgrade will attempt to install the same edition in Windows 11 as you have on your Windows 10 device. If you have Windows 10 Home in S mode and your PC meets the minimum hardware specifications for Windows 11, you can upgrade to Windows 11 Home in S mode.
Windows 11 in S mode is only available in the Windows 11 Home edition. If you have the Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions of Windows 10 in S mode, Windows Update will not offer Windows 11 because S mode is not available in those editions of Windows 11. Therefore, if you have the Pro, Enterprise or Education editions of Windows 10 in S mode, you'll need to switch out of S mode to upgrade to Windows 11.

Here's how from the Tutorial section- in Windows 10:

Switch from Windows 10 in S mode to Windows 10 Pro

See links in that tutorial for other cases and scenarios.

Hopefully the equivalent tutorial is available on

    elevenforum.com

    - for Windows 11.

You can run the check programs (MS and 3rd party) that are widely described, and of course you could try upgrading any time you wish by downloading an iso file.

Personally, having tried Win 11 in a VM, it's more awkward to deal with. Less customisable, and you can read about the more limited functionality of the taskbar if you search.

I set up a new Win11 Notebook a week ago for a client, came in S Mode. Tried to get it out of S but couldn't because she doesn't have a Microsoft Account, only Local, and couldn't get it from the Store. Same thing happened with Google Chrome but fortunately exporting her Chrome links from the old Win10 computer allowed importing to Edge on the new one. And No, she doesn't want a the Microsoft Account, a bit paranoid [family issues]. As has been posted in forums S Mode mostly works with Store Apps. I've not had an S Mode computer, hers is the first I've worked with, did get the full Offline Chrome and will try it if she still wants to. I've installed Chromium on a couple of computers, with limited use do prefer it to Google Chrome.

This thread and others begs the question of why many new computers come with the S mode ?

MSN attempt to "push" one of their services ? Would like to see a survey of how many remain in the S mode. Very few, I suspect. It is just an annoyance that causes the buyer undue process.

A lot of software in Microsoft Store [even Apple's Store] can be free but odds are they make money from what is paid for. Same can be said about all the advertising on that Microsoft News and Weather feature, some things carry a disclaimer that Microsoft will profit from purchases made from the ads.

Thanks! I have been so lucky to find you. I couldn't solve this problem too.
