i's say that you've got corrupt media files and explorer is tripping up with creating thumbnails/ reading those files. if you ruled out video file corruption and you have enough space on a spare drive you can try moving all personally created/ downloaded image and preferably video files to it.

On the other hand for images it's tricky and time consuming if you have a lot of images where you want to keep EXIF data.

If you don't want to keep EXIF data you might use JPG Cleaner to delete corrupt files. Or you can scroll through each image and check for thumbnail preview creation and that takes a lot of time for multiple images.

Or you can just opt to clean (with delete corrupt images selected) and check the log for problem images if there are any errors shown.

If your images are important then don't run it without a backup of all images saved to another drive or else unless you havew a full system image backup/ restore solution in place.

@Callender : Thanks, that'll be my next thing to try. I remembered Process Explorer existed and I'm gonna check if I can see any useful info when it trips this session.

@dalchina : I'll try safe mode sometime this weekend and thanks for your input, you are right. I rush installed everything I used on my W7 PC and brought all my files over. I should've taken more care, but was definitely a bit too confident because I figured "if my files & stuff worked on W7, surely it'll be fine on W10." I simply didn't know that W10's explorer was even more sensitive than W7, haha. But yeah, doing a clean reinstall and slowly introducing stuff is gonna be my last option that I'm trying to hold off from doing for as long as possible.

Btw, I built this PC on December 9th and installed everything on the same day. I had the first instance of this problem occur on December 17th, which I just assumed was related to .WAVs having metadata (also happened on W7) because I didn't change the registry key to block explorer from pulling it. I rebooted my PC and didn't think much of it after. Next occurrence was probably a couple weeks later I guess.

    - could be that you have used one or more older programs that are not fully compatible.

Review what you have installed- licensed and freeware.

Sumo updater (free version) is one way to get a quick view of program versions and updates as a list which can be ordered.

Assuming your file system - on a new disk, recently created files- is ok, it's less likely you have a corrupt file, unless somehow you've copied one or more onto your disk.

Hi all, just posting here to say that I haven't had this happen in almost 12 days uptime (since my last post here) and am convinced that I managed to solve it.

I don't know what I exactly did because I ended up throwing a bunch of things at it that day, but here's a list:
    1. Deleted a few .heic files that were in a sub folder in my pictures folder
    2. Deleted .webp files
    3. Deleted some __MACOSX folders that were included with music albums zipped by Mac user, all of which included a resource fork for a JPG/PNG/etc file... something Windows (or any picture program) could not read or draw a thumbnail from.
    4. Disabled "Show recently added apps", "Show suggestions occasionally in Start" and "Show recently opened items in Jump List on Start and in File Explorer Quick Access" in Settings->Personalization->Start
    5. Rebuilt index and set it to not include "ogg" (and related) files.

Number 4 & 5 are ideas I read on the other threads on the internet about similar problems with explorer.

I'm convinced it was just explorer.exe going nuts at things it couldn't pull a thumbnail from (possibly the .heic files or the MACOSX resource forks that I accidentally kept).

It's crazy how unstable explorer is and I wish there was actual fail safes in place or proper diagnostics to figure it out! Oh well.

Anyway, I wanna thank everybody here who helped me and gave me ideas to try.

Unfortunately I have this problem for years on Windows 10, and this is not only me I have seen lots of people complaining about this problem. Windows 10 gives me horrendous times. Never ever had this problem in other Windows versions. In update changelog it is always have been said that file explorer crash is fixed but actually it is not. I think it happens if you use some media or photo openers as default, Windows File Explorer starts to give sh*t at some files and it makes the crash. Latest rumors saying that they are going to separate taskbar and Explorer to fix this problem but I don't think windows will do this which it is always has been like this since the beginning, 1985, and it is very hard to create a new beginning to Windows history. Windows 10 is operating system that is botched from previous Windows versions and it is a very bad one, of all the times.
