Thanks for answering! I do have 4 folders (not shortcuts) on my desktop for "Games", "Music", "Videos" and "Other stuff". Gonna look into it and report back later!

Well it might not be the problem but have a read here for confirmation of the possible cause:

How to Speed Up a Windows Folder that Loads Very Slowly

So to test to see if it is the issue set all folders and libraries to either details view or list view and disable automatic folder type discovery to prevent windows changing view settings when you add files to a folder or library.

Change Folder Template in Windows 10
Turn off automatic folder type discovery.
    Option Three / Item 3
Then manually change all library templates.

Then clear thumbnail cache and reboot.

Clear and Reset Thumbnail Cache in Windows 10

    If the problem persists

    Install media preview:

Media Preview 1.4.3 Free Download - VideoHelp

Set explorer view on problem folders to show thumbnails and scroll through the video files to see if there are any where thumbnail creation hangs or thumbnail isn't visible. If you find any either delete them or move them to another drive. Sometimes you can simply re-encode them using a video converter and it fixes the thumbnails issue.

You can always change folder view settings again later if t works out.

Another option for you to try is using a secondary local account on your PC when convenient to see if it behaves differently :
Add Local Account or Microsoft Account in Windows 10

    Thanks for the replies!

Starting with this one and I'll see if the problem still pops up in the next few days:

So I just ran the .bat under option 3 for "general items". Screen flicked for a sec and explorer reloaded. Was that enough to disable automatic folder type discovery? or did I need to do another step too?

Also, I cleared my thumbnail cache (420MB) and rebooted my PC.

    Thanks again.

Right click each library and change template to general items.

Thanks, I totally overlooked this step. I've now set all libraries to "general items." :)

    - - - Updated - - -

It started up and I noticed it when I plugged my phone in. Endless loading and "open with" option began crashing. This time was a little different for a short period of time as a few files were "fine."
I could right click "open with" for these items: .txt, .rar, .zip, .mid and ,aiff.
However, all image files and .mp3, .wav, .flac and .m4a were all crashing.

I don't know if this was a coincidence or not, but I decided to uninstall IrfanView and that caused all file extensions to crash explorer when selecting "open with."

About my phone, it's an old S5 and it defaults to "charging mode" (so no files were shown to windows). I never changed the mode to file transfer.

An hour before, I was doing some backups with my external HDD and didn't have the problem pop up.

    Any ideas?

Going to reboot now and see if I can trigger it again.

edit: rebooted and plugged my phone in again. the problem didn't spring up. I really don't know now...

Reinstall the same version of Irfanview (right click installer and run as admin). Then launch the program with admin rights and from the GUI select "Properties > File Associations" uncheck all and apply.

Reboot then run a decent uninstaller to remove Irfanview. Here are a couple of portable apps:

Geek Uninstaller - the best FREE uninstaller

HiBit Uninstaller (Get portable if using this)

Uninstall Irfanview with leftovers scan. Reboot after removal.

Re-associate image file extensions with some other program like Windows Photo Viewer or whatever other program you choose.

If you like Irfanview and want to reinstall it I'd suggest not setting it as default and insted using the thumbnail browser to open files or else right click "open with" menu to open images in Irfanview without checking the "Always use this program" checkbox.

Hi everybody. Still having the problem unfortunately! So I reinstalled IrfanView and made sure the file associations were unchecked before uninstalling.

Anyway, I caught it while it was just popping up. (1 day and 18 hours uptime) It began with just the loading bar at "This PC" and the Open With option was not crashing yet for any files. While this was beginning, I noticed that half? of my images (all types) spread across multiple folders were not loading within Windows default Photos app... all I got was a blank window. However, if I checked "Always show icons, never thumbnails" (https://i.imgur.com/EiwYnAi.png) in the file explorer options, it kinda remedied the problem at the time, but only some of the affected images could load, not all. One picture in particular was a reference to what QuickAccess folders I had pinned since clearing the cache also removed your pins. Thumbnails disabled = Microsoft Photos app will show it. Also, that setting stopped the loading bar too at the time.

After playing with that setting and checking back & forth to confirm that the setting was actually allowing those images to be loaded, I decided to try deleting thumbnail cache to see if it'll help at all and I don't know if it was a coincidence, but that caused the whole problem to go out full force and start crashing my "open with" menu for every single file type. This includes txt, all audio, images, videos, even archives like rar and zip.

Not 100% sure, I think I'm leaning toward some file(s) are just tripping explorer.exe and this will be a long process figuring out which is causing it. (Since the issue doesn't immediately pop up after boot up, it's gotta be files right? We're talking 1-5 days before explorer starts freaking out)

This post in particular kinda gives me hope since it's the same symptoms. (although my downloads folder is clean lol)
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-edc8a4e8b359

For now, I'm gonna check every folder manually for thumbnail corruption and maybe move things to my external drive and temporarily delete them on my main drive.

As always, thanks for the replies! If any ideas come to mind, feel free to post. It's 100% appreciated.

    UPDATE:
I dug through everything and changed each folder to show thumbnails one by one while watching the "open as" menu and the loading bar. I managed to trip it fairly quick a few times (thumbnails would stop loading, "open as" begins crashing, long load for "This PC", etc), however when I return to the same folder that I stopped at to reboot the computer, it just loads like normal. Also back tracked and checked each folder multiple times.

I was viewing things like image files, MP3s, FLACs, etc. Anything that could hold thumbnail data.

I believe I've loaded every thumbnail on my PC... and manually scrolled through EVERY folder (including the ones that I rebooted at) and also searched "jpg", "jpeg", "png", "bmp", "gif", "mp3", "flac", "wmv", "flv", "mkv", "webm", "avi" and other things with search result showing large icons and I didn't encounter anything.

This is where my thumbnail size sits at now.

I'm unsure what's next, this was my last idea. I've backtracked through every folder, including the ones where I ended up rebooting my PC at and they all ended up loading just fine.

I guess it's the waiting game again. But I wonder if it's hardware or OS file related problem now.

    Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, have you yet compared what you're experiencing with what you see in Safe Mode?

If all is well in Safe Mode, that might suggest the files and file system are ok, and you can move on to consider/eliminate what else runs in normal mode, and work back from that by disabling things.

    Noting:
I built a new PC a month ago and this is my first time using Windows 10 so I don't know much about the OS and how to optimize it
    - it's possible you rushed into installing everything you could reasonably throw at it and configuring things left right and centre.

    Here's how I approach a clean install:
    a. Install O/S and as early as possible start using disk imaging regularly and routinely; enable System Restore; set up daily schedule to create a restore point (tutorial).
    b. Install a few things, keeping simple notes on that and any configuration changes. Check all seems well.
    c. Update disk image
    d. Repeat (b,c).

Then, if/when something goes wrong I can restore to a previous good state, review notes and repeat - and see if I encounter the problem.

In an ideal world that's great- until you hit some problem created a long time back you didn't notice at the time.. but it can save a lot of time. And once you have got your system configured, there are fewer changes of course, so it's less likely backtracking is hard.

Have you started to use restore points and disk imaging yet?
