How to scan the registry in a backup copy of Windows?

I'm used to loading hives in RegEdit but had no idea that tools such as RegScanner could then search them.
I had assumed that loading hives in RegEdit was no more than extending the reach of the tool RegEdit itself.

Have you used RegScanner or similar and successfully searched for & found items in an additional hive that had been loaded in RegEdit?
