Windows 10 - Icons WILL NOT stay in place on the desktop

Today's silly question. New build, Windows 10 Pro. I don't remember having this problem for YEARS on the old system, but I've got it now!

I've looked at a dozen topics on keeping the desktop icons in place between boots. Yes, I've checked and unchecked the auto arrange icons and align icons to grid in every combination I can find (all 4). With "Auto arrange icons" turned off I get a square block of rearranged icons in the corner. Turn it back on and I get the normal layout but they're still rearranged.

I've found the desktop Icon settings screen and turned OFF the "let themes change desktop icons". Just checked and it's still off.

I've hit "Refresh" every time I've configured the desktop the way I want.

I've even deleted the icon<whatever>.db file from Appdata>Roaming.

It's a BRAND NEW build, so yes, the AMD 5700XT has the current drivers.

NOTHING HAS WORKED. Which means I'm MISSING something obvious and stupid. What'd I miss?

I've even tried TWO of the supposed tools that save your icon placement and restore it if it changes. NEITHER appears to work on Windows 10.

    What am I missing?

    It's stranger than I thought...............

I changed the SIZE to LARGE. Organized icons, rebooted, everything stayed in place. I changed the size to small, rebooted, they stayed in place. I set it back to medium and rebooted - they CHANGED. Unfortunately, the LARGE icons are ugly, and the small ones are unreadable!

This HAS to be something stupid...

Instead of setting the icon size, try CTRL+ mouse wheel to change the size, roll towards you to increase size.

Right click an open area of the desktop.

    Choose view.

Make sure both auto arrange and align to grid are UNchecked.

    Now arrange icons.

    Reboot.

You have to arrange them AFTER turning those two off

I use DesktopOK to reset the icons when their positions get mangled

There are several 3rd party tools around- DesktopOK as Steve C suggests has been mentioned repeatedly on tenforums.

Another interesting approach is Stardock's Fences.

And of course minimise the icons you actually keep on the desktop- best not to keep large items or significant ones there, just temporary items- and there's really no need to have loads of shortcuts there- there are much better options.

OK, this is EITHER a sign of the coming apocalypse or simply that the universe is screwing with me.......

I have NEVER, in all the umpteen years of using Windows 10 had to go through this level of gyrations to try to get the &^%$#@ icons to sit there quietly where they're supposed to be.

I FINALLY followed the instructions above and shut everything off, then put the icons sort-of where they're supposed to be and rebooted... At the MOMENT they're good.

BUT, then last night I THOUGHT they were good when I made them small... But today THOSE were rearranging themselves too. The ONLY thing I did this morning was change the display settings from 100% to 125%, and that seemed to be enough to cause problems......

I'm going to try another one of those programs that's supposed to put the icons back, but so far the three I've tried don't do ANYTHING.....

I can see 100 to 125 causing the icons to want to move to social distance because of Covid

dalchina, what are the better options? 'Cause I've got ALL the important icons on the desktop because the #$%^&*( Start button is so UTTERLY unproductive... I actually have a long question I was going to put in here asking about how to actually try to make Windows 10 at least remotely efficient, and I think I will, 'cause now having seen how totally wretched Windows 11 is (which I'm going to have to go to), I'd LOVE to hear from some knowledgeable people how to improve either of these...

Currently, I have to be really desperate to ever hit the Start button and everything I NORMALLY need 95% is on the desktop with everything I need for 99% of the time is on the Taskbar...

BUT, I'll start a new topic to whine about Windows 10 and 11. At the moment I JUST WANT THE <bleeping> ICONS TO STAY WHERE THEY BELONG! I'm going to go try DesktopOK again.

    ------------- OK, THAT was quick.

Here's the FIRST problem I have with DesktopOK... WHAT IS all this garbage? And do you trust software that looks like this?

I don't like the Win 10 start menu, but at a pinch, Win key + S (or the search box if you have that on your task bar) and a quick search can work wonders.

Open Shell (free) - often mentioned here- best features of Win 7 and XP start menus, configurable in behaviour and appearance, skinnable, full drag 'n drop support. Create your own folders.. organise your shortcuts in nice neat categories.

You can use that as your start menu, including UWP Store apps; expandable control panel, and still use the Win 10 start menu when you want. Plus it makes it easy to add to or organise your start menu.

Also has a configurable search box. Search programs/files/internet as you like.

Then there are programs that let you add shortcuts in categories. One I used to use is sTabLauncher (free). Customisable, drag 'n drop, autohide, but only at the top of the screen (or bottom I think). Small, neat, can look nicer than the screenshots.

Really want keep shortcuts on your desktop? Try Fences:

Create areas on your desktop containing categorised shortcuts.
