These are my options on the tails download page. Which ISO would you suggest? And it definitely can be put on a USB despite it being for DVD or VM? Incidentally, thank you SO MUCH for all the time you're spending on me (both of you). Much appreciated.

    I took the DVD

I think the USB image is flawed, Both attempt on two different drives ended with non-operational file system.

I was using the USB one with no problem on my last rig. It gave me problems as soon as I started using this new one which is why I think the new mobo with it's inability to use CSM is to blame... Anyway, out of time here, I'll put the ISO onto that 16GB stick later on. Thanks again.

    From the comments section:

    Greywolf:
Are you freaking KIDDING ME?!?!? I have to have a discrete GPU just to be able to BOOT FROM A USB STICK?
    Anthony:
Update for Windows 10/11 installation, with regard to the problems identified above.

Annoyingly the Microsoft Media Creation Tool for Windows 10/11 automatically formats the USB boot drive to the Partition style: Master Boot Record (MBR), viewed in Device Properties, Volume tab. This occurs even if the drive has been pre-formatted to Partition style: GUID Partition Table (GPT).

Therefore the USB drive must be converted to a GPT partition table

I will avoid Asus fom now on.

Maybe using diskgenius free version to convert the tails usb to gpt will get around the annoyance.

The latest one I've seen are UEFI only. No CMS available.

No problem creating the drive in GPT directly with Rufus.

I think the op already has a tails usb that wont load. perhaps all he needs to do is covert that to gpt . A few seconds to do with diskgenius.

Hi SIW2 and thanks for joining in. I ran diskgenius and it tells me that my usual tails USB (the 128Gb made as per tails' instructions) is already GPT.
I tried to emulate MaloK by putting the ISO (not the img) on a 16Gb stick with FAT32 formatting. No luck. Pressed F8 on my BIOS, my PC's HDD and the stick were both there but selecting the stick just took me back to the BIOS F7 screen.
Out of curiosity, I put tails on the 16Gb stick in the normal way (img file/etcher). From Windows, I went: Restart,Use a Device and it took me to a black screen with 'Welcome to GRUB' on it. Never saw that before. The screen was gonna be there all night so restarted the PC and tried to boot into the 16Gb stick via BIOS - same story, selected the stick but BIOS didn't want to play.

    It's all getting too weird...

That is exactly what happens on my rig when I use Etcher and the iso...

Normally it's so fast it's impossible to notice...

I'll try the USB image with etcher and report back.

    ... Booted right away
