Left click works in browser but not in taskbar or desktop

    MSI Titan GT80 SLI
    Latest-greatest win10

the touchpad and an external mouse - both have the same behavior
the left click does not work on anything in taskbar, or the Start option.

However the left click works just fine in Brave browser. (chrome based). For the most part, has some weirdness but basically works. But I cannot select anything from the taskbar, any pinned items.
Nor can I start anything with the left click from the desktop.

Also, sometimes the left click does not work at all. I have to reboot multiple times for it to work in a limited capacity.(i.e. the browser).

That suggests there is a software problem.

    @dictum

I would start by running sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt.

Now it just switched, taskbar works but not the browser. It's like it gets stuck in a certain mode.

Are all drivers up-to-date as well as Windows?

Yeah, I did an update on all the drivers. Everything is up to date. Running 21H2, build 19044.1387

since I have an identical GT80, I swapped the disk from the 'faulty' machine into the backup machine and everything works. touchpad clicky, rebooted twice and did not find any issues. Swapped it back into the faulty machines and the left clicky is kind of random. So it's not tied to the Win10 OS, or so it seems.
Otherwise it would have imported the issue into the other GT80, which is identical and it did not.

I tried to do the sfc command and just could not get it to run, could not get the terminal to open at all. I tried to access it via the Start menu but could not right click on it since right click also got disabled. Now am running it.

Plugged in an external mouse to no avail. It does not increase the chances, meaning when it doesn't work, the external doesn't work either. I am back in the functional mode will am running the above command while it works.

It does appear to be a hardware issue with the touchpad and its clickies but that is kind of strange because when I hit CNTRL-alt-del the power menu there is responsive to the left click.

First of all, does this look like a hardware issue or a software issue?

Why, when the faulty disk got moved to another machine I could not find any manifestation of the problem?

However, it does not really seem to be a hardware issue, because the left click sometimes works. Say, after 3 reboots.
Or it works on some parts of the screen but not others. e.g. can click in browser but not taskbar. Or vice-versa.

and, if the built-in clicky does not work, the external mouse does not work either.

and, when I swapped the disk from a 'working' machine, it too began having issues in the 'faulty' machine.

The two GT80s are configured identically. Each one boots off the primary SSD but each primary SSD gets cloned to an a backup SSD. Meaning I have 4 versions of Win10, two per machine but only one in each is regularly booted. I swapped the clones

Ran the dism commands, found nothing. Did not run the "restorehealth" option.

Reinstalled it, rebooted, to no avail.

The only thing that works, to come out of the left-click-stuck-mode is to right click vigorously and it takes it out of that stuck mode.

Look through ---dxdiag ---to see if there are any reports.
Also check in Reliability History for any relevant flagged entries. If so,then ---view tech details --- lines 1 - 3 should give searchable information.
