Folders pinned to Explorer Quick Access keep hard disk running?

    Hi all,

I use a high capacity SATA spinning hard disk for storing media, and recently tried pinning folders from the disk to Win Explorer's 'quick access' tab on the left side, for convenience.

Usually when I try to access the drive there is a slight delay as I have my power plan options set to turn off hard disks after 20 minutes.

I'm worried that keeping a directory pinned to Quick access is constantly keeping my drive on as there is no delay anymore now.

Anyone have more insight on this topic? I want to prolong the life of the drive and keep usage minimal as it's mainly a backup drive.

Yes your drive is staying on.

The delay was because you let them stop spinning.

Do you have Folder Options set to This PC ?

    Hmm I suspected as much.

I had explorer open Quick access by default, didn't notice that option before.

So if I'm guessing correctly, every time I launch explorer to Quick access, explorer tries to read folder contents, and by switching to This PC in folder options I would avoid having the drive turned on?

It all depends on where you save the data.

My game drive only comes on when I game, my movie drive only comes on when I want to watch a movie etc etc.

I`m not positive if switching from Quick Access to This PC will stop the drives from spinning, I always change Folder options to This PC right away after a clean install.

I actually hear my drives spin up when I need to use them.

I think it`s better to let them spin down if you are gonna sit at your computer for 6 or 8 hours and not need them. Just my opinion
