    21H2 update problem.

Has anyone else run this update and ended up with numerous duplicate files and folders as I have though it all works?

    Not I.
I used the "enablement package" applied to 21H1.

What version of Win10 did you start from? 21H1? 20H2? Something older?

Which update method did you use?

    Win10's internal Windows update service?

"Update now" button on the MS November 2021 installation Web page? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Setup.exe on the installation media created by the Media Creation tool available on that same Web page?

    Some other method?

    1. 21H1
    2. Downloaded Win10_21H2_English_x64.exe from MS and ran it.
OOPS... Your link finds a different method. I'll restore and try that!
    Thanks

I have now restored 21H1 x3 times and applied your link 2x. Both ended up with data loss such as losing settings and taskbar links and each took 3x as long as my update download though no duplication was evident. Seems you were a lucky man! Going to sleep on my next effort taking into consideration that the only noticeable improvent was Explorer stability which didn't crash anymore. Watch this space.
PS your method did not condemn my Office 16 as unregistered (which it isn't) as did mine which required a re-install.

When all else fails... try an In-Place Upgrade.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Thanks Ghot, my mistake it was the Win10_21H2_English_x64.ISO (not an EXE) that I used the first time and shall try again this time. It was the one that left the duplicates. If it does it again I'll just live with them.

That`s odd, because 21H2 just unlocks some items, it`s barely an update at all.

Through windows update it takes about 1 minute.

I've done the Upgrade by right-click and Mount of the .iso in File Explorer and run setup.exe, it will show as an ODD/Optical Disc Drive and can be ejected later. It's great when not having an ODD in the computer.

Gave up with the H2 iso and got Update working again and left it to do it. Unfortunately it hasn't, simply saying that the H2 upgrade was optional but giving no clue how to accept the option! I am now informed my updates are up to date but winver shows I'm not as still on 21H1 !!!

On your computer's "Windows Updates" page, select (click on) the blue text which says "View optional updates". That should take you to another page which says
    -----------------
    Optional updates
    Choose the updates you want...

    > Windows updates

    Download and install

    Get help
    -----------------
If you select (click on) the ">", it'll show a list of the optional updates which are available to your computer, with a checkbox in front of each one. (There might be only one item in that list, the 21H2 update.)

Click on the checkbox (it'll turn blue), then click on the button which says "Download and install"

Follow its instructions, restarting when it has finished.

    @selden
There is no blue text about optional updates showing on the updates page unfortunately, nor is there a > visible.
