How to Stop Folders from Auto Expanding in Windows 10?

Hi. In Windows 10 it is very common that I need to drag a file or folder to another location in Windows Explorer. Every single time that I do this, at the exact moment that I drop the file or folder, Windows 10 decides to expand that to show me every folder under it, meaning that I have now dropped that file someplace else. It is driving me crazy. How can I stop these menus from auto expanding when I drop a file? They don't do this if I hover just the mouse...

Well I have this thing called QT toolbar which allows you to optimize various folder settings ( like in Windows 98 ) for Windows 10. It sounds like problem or setting in QT toolbar. Try setting that up and changing setting of folders.

That being said folder options AKA file explorer options. Some of the options are switched around in Windows 10. It also might the release of 10 you are using.

I believe that auto-expand when dragging-and-dropping is a thing that has been around a while, and I generally find it helpful - but as you say, sometimes a tree expands just as one drops, and the destination is then anyone's guess.

That said, I just tested it, and find that the little arrows that identtify the presence of sub-folders completely disappear once one has dragged the object from the RH pane into the LH pane - with the result that one has no idea which folders even have sub-folders. I have seen a similar effect before, but don't recall being bothered by it recently. When not in the middle of a drag'n'drop, the folder arrows similarly disappear when the mouse is in the RH pane, and only re-appear when one moves it to the LH pane.

This is bizarre and unhelpful, and I can't imagine what they at MS were smoking when they implemented it.

Is this new, or have I just failed to notice?

Update: behaviour is OK if one is quick enough to grap the object in the RH pane before the folder arrows in the LH pane disappear - then once over on the LHS they remain - go figure!

Although there don't seem to be any solutions to this problem, the workaround I use is to press SHIFT+TAB, once, prior to starting a drag & drop, so the arrows in the LH Pane are kept visible when the RH Pane item is started to be dragged. Then once I start dragging, I wait and anticipate any auto-expansion (if on an item which shows any arrow indicating the presence of sub-folders) before actually releasing the mouse.

The issue is the same as I see but to the end of accuracy and eliminating loss of data I use the Registry edit [in the Tutorials section] to add Copy to and Move to on the right-click context menu to assure I pick the right location without it moving on me.

Hello, just be quicker to drag and drop. I have to hover a file over for some time before anything gets expanded.
