I do not like external drives. USB pens do not count as the same but are safe to rename. When you rename or partition external drives make sure the drive and not the case it is held in is being renamed. In the past that problem has occur where I rename the drive but it was actually the case/hardware I rename. Sometimes the drive and the electronics are being read as two different drives.

Right, the Label of a drive can be whatever but there are some characters that can't be used, will be an error message when tried. And there's a limit of 11 or 13 characters allowed. I rename mine in a manner that indicates the drive capacity of USB drives such as WDC4TB_1 and WDC4TB_2 for my pair of Western Digital drives, also use DATA for the D: partition on the internal drive.

Can't you just right click the drive in explorer and choose "Rename"?

    Or in CMD prompt type:

    C:\> LABEL C: YOURLABEL

Replace C with the drive letter you would like to name

That's how I've done it except for the boot/system drive where it may have some restriction. It can also be done from the Command Prompt run with Administrative rights.
