Stored Files On DVD-R And Elsewhere Suddenly Inacessable In 21H1

While I think I may have caused this problem myself by turning off something in W10-Pro I shouldn't have, I now have the following problem: when I go to data files from my previous W7-Pro installation stored on DVD-R (and even on my W10-Pro's system hard drive), I suddenly find that I can not access things by file name and path. The DVD/CD drive gets recognized but not a disk's (or partition's) contents. As I am in my mid-80s and don't really understand many of the aspects of W10-Pro (21H1), the W10-Pro installation itself has appeared stable for the past month. I also plead guilty to preferring the old file nomenclature style of 'directories' and 'sub-directories' to the newer 'folder' and icon-based nomenclature now in fashion. I also want to be able to see the complete name and path of a file, i.e., for example - d:\abc\zyxw\45Qgf\filename.exx.

Accordingly, how do I turn access to files stored on DVD-R and CD-R disks back on and how do I arrange things so I can see the complete file name and path of what is stored on the DVD or CD? While I may be asking two questions, I think the two issues may be related.

All advice, directions, guidance, and/or suggestions are welcomed. Step-by-step instructions will be particularly helpful as my old brain no longer works as well as it used to. My thanks, in advance, for all who respond.

    At a guess, it's nothing you've done.

If the drive is recognized but no disk is detected, it may be a hardware problem.

Does it fail to detect both CDs and DVDs? I ask because different lasers are used for each.

    @Henrik37

This may be of some help to you. This is a way to remove all the excess folders from ThisPC.
Add or Remove Folders from This PC in Windows 10

With a little bit of tweaking you can get ThisPC looking like it should...

" I also want to be able to see the complete name and path of a file, i.e., for example - d:\abc\zyxw\45Qgf\filename.exx."

    That is:

File Explorer > View Tab > Tick box for File name extensions.

File Explorer > View Tab > Options > Change Folder and search options > View Tab > Display full path in the title bar, tick box.

    Apply > OK.

I would also untick Show Libraries, which just confuses me.

The list of tick boxes there has been broadly similar going back many versions of Windows, predates Windows XP.
The defaults for the latest versions of Windows is those 2 off, it is the first thing I insist on turning back on.

Download the trial version of ---Isobuster---and see if it finds any content.
If it does, then run---sfc /scannow--- and ---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth---to repair any possible file damage.

As for you disc not being recognized, try the disc in another computer. If it can't be read, the disc may be damaged.

I'm not sure what you mean here? The Windows structure since Windows 3.1 has been Directory/Folder/File this hasn't changed. Icons were invented back in those days to differentiate between programs in addition to using file names. Follow the instructions in post #4 to see the File Name +Extension,

If the Disc plays on another computer but not this one, then the DVD drive laser may have failed and the drive will need to be replaced. They are very inexpensive these days and easy to replace.
You can also test the DVD drive by taking it out of this computer and installing it on another computer, just the cables, you don' have to screw it in. If that disc doesn't work on another computer with that drive, then you know it's the drive, not the disc or the computer.
