That's an old build.. what's the last update you received? (Update History or Control Panel, Programs & Features, Installed Updates).

Hi, I think the reason is that the folder view count is 5000 and therefore forgets it. I can rest it and it works temporarily. Sometimes during the day it will just revert back to its default.

Note that build 18363.1916 corresponds to Windows 10 version 1909. It's not an Insider build. For Enterprise customers, it's supported until next summer.

    See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...se-information

When strange problems are encountered which cannot be fixed by a reboot, a centralized IT department's response necessarily has to be to wipe and reinstall. They simply don't have the resources to do anything else. I suspect that's why Danny is asking for help here.

When Quick Access loses its unique hybrid tiles view and/or grouping, all that's required is:

View ribbon -> Folder Options -> View tab -> Reset Folders button

    Hi Keith,

Yes I have done this and it temporarily fixes it. Sometimes throughout the day it will just revert itself back to default. Why would this be the case? Any reason it is quick access the only folder that’s been affected. By default this is the first folder to open via file explorer.

I actually noticed a previous post from yourself, which details to run a power shell command and I have therefore reached the 5000 limit. I didn’t think I have made 5000 different folder view settings as I only changed a few folders column widths etc. so where does my 5000 folder view settings come from? It it becuase I have that many folders on that view setting?

I see you previous posted to delete registry keys to remove the saved folder views but I am not an IT expert but could ask my IT department to do this to ensure a safe operation. However, I did see you previously post if you apply to all folders this will minimise any issues since quick access has its own folder view. Is this correct? I presume you would say the registry key deletion is the best approach to do rather than apply to all folders?

    Thanks

    Danny

    • Any time you display a folder, including dialogs and just navigating through a folder, regardless of whether or not you modify the view, the view settings are saved.
    • The property bags for the views afe indexed by their fully-qualified path inn the Shell Namespace, i.e. This PC\Documents, <UserName>\Documents, and This PC\C:\Users\<UserID>\Documents all save their own view.
    • A "Search results in..." view is saved for every location where a search was initiated.

So they can accumulate faster than you would expect.

Deletion of BagMRU & Bags is best when you've maxed out. Apply to Folders for Quick Access can't hurt and may help.

    Hi Keith,

    Thanks for your help.

So apply to folders will only apply to quick access and no others since it has its own template?

Last question do I need to run as an admin to delete these registry keys? If so, I will need to get my IT department to look into its since it’s controlled under GPO.

    Thanks

As it's a company PC, I would let your IT dept take responsibility. The sort of repair actions that might be suggested are probably not possible depending on what group policies are in place.
You can not make any changes with your computer, your IT dept would have to make any changes. You can make suggestions to them presented here, but there is nothing you can do on your own.

Correct. Qucik Access has its own dedicated type.

No. Values under HKCU don't require elevated permissions. Only values under HKLM.
