Errors on creating, renaming, deleting folders in explorer

    Hi

Any help greatly appreciated. This has me worried. Various things happening I will try to describe them all but I suspect they may all be related.

On trying to delete a folder told that I need administaror permissions and then that I need permissions of myself as yser on the current machine.

Noticed too that this afternoon creatign a new folder in explorer and it does not immediately appear for naming. I refresh ecploere and it appears but I am prevented from renaming it being told it is not longer present in that location. Refresh explorer agian by whatever method and I can then rename.

Some folders refusing to be deleted even though permission look exactly same as those on other folders behaving normally. Changign permissions to alolow everyone fulll control, they coudl be deleted or they coudl be deleted by deleting all the contents then folder deletion was allowed.

I created a new folder (of that I was originally trying to rename) and copied all contents across from the folder I wanted to rename. Got error messages that this could not complete, try again, skip etc. But when I looked (probably effectively a refresh again) the had in fact been deleted although in some cases was still displaying in explorer as present (error not present in this location).

I'm a bit confused as to what is going on. Is it time for a wipe and refromat of the disk?

Hi, please post a screenshot of your task manager, Processes tab when you are having these problems. Ideally I would hope to see low resource usage.

    Please boot to Safe Mode.
Try folder operations with a folder you create on your desktop.
    Do you notice any problems?

If so, please post a screenshot.

On trying to delete a folder told that I need administaror permissions and then that I need permissions of myself as yser on the current machine.
Depends which folder that was and where it was.

Run a couple of routine checks.
    a. Download a copy of Hard Disk Sentinel (includes SSDs, excellent, functional trial).
Results are right on its Gui - green is good.
    Aree all disks ok?
    b. from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk X: /scan
where X is the drive letter of the drive/partition where you were having this problem.
Advise if that passes or not.

    Thanks.

    Refresh Issue

Thanks for that will get on it.

In meantime, the folder name, rename, delete issues and related error messages in part is just because windows explorer has suddenly started requiring a refresh for each step to show the new folder for renaming, then again after it has been renamed etc. So I have to keep hitting F5 for every step in the process including the moving of files from one folder to another. Is there a solution to that? That would be part of the probelm solved and I can then see if there are any remaining problems.

    Thanks

Tha bit has been solved by a restart of explorer. I will watch for any remaining issues and folow dalchina's advice should they still be present.

Ok, now you describe it like that:
    Some ideas here:
Folders not refreshing automatically in Windows 10 >> Winhelponline

This issue has also been addressed on tenforums at some point.

    Try searching for (e.g.)
    explorer does not autorefresh

You;ll find quite a number of threads. Example:
    File Explorer stopped refreshing

Thanks. Yes but I don't think that explains what appear to have been permissions issues whcih I will follow up to see what I can pin down further. Thank you for your assistance.

No, you have multiple issues. You've not stated which folders and where they were when you had permissions problems.

Nor have you done the routine checks.

Naturally if it's not a huge effort, once you know your disk is sound, you might consider a clean install.

Or before that an in-place upgrade repair install.

Folders on a non-system drive, data only.

I have copies fo data so can easily wipe, reformat and copy back.

Did you created the folders on the drive or the drive was taken from another computer or was created by another user?
