OK ... still not quite there ..... running the CIPHER command did clear the icon issue from all files.
However just created a new number of files and the icon is back on each file.

So it worked but does not fic the cause.

I'll try setting general properties as advised above

    - - - Updated - - -

OK ... unfortuntaley it has not fixed the issue ...... just download a zip file to desktop ..... it had the icon on top right
When I unzipped it ..... all contained files then had the icon
Again I could apply 'right-click>file onershp>personal' and it removes it
I also noticed it works at folder level ... the pack of files within unzipped folder, I carried out 'right-click>file onershp>personal' on the folder and it removed icon from all files contained within folder.

Just need to find out how to disable this as default

Kindly post a screenshot of the properties for the folder you are having problems with like the one in the tutorial I posted:

All saved file now have padlock icon-1.jpg

Also any other screenshots you think may be helpful.

Question: how do you think all this started?

Do you routinely protect yourself from problems by e.g.
    - scheduling a System Restore point daily (tutorial available)
    - routinely and regularly using disk imaging as is endlessly recommended here? (e.g. Macrium Reflect - free/paid + large enough external storage for image files)

With these measures you have some chance of being able to recover without technical assistance should things suddenly go wrong.

All files/folders on desktop were file (after cipher command run as per above)

Today just freshly downloaded a new file (zip archive)
Pic attached shows it arrives with icon in top right corner (no longer padlock see post #8 in this thread)
If I unzip .. all unzipped files also have icon.

The properties view is attached ....... it seems that by default all files are being saved with 'Encrypt contents ....' enabled.

This only started a few weeks ago .... and only on new files.
Only addition out of the ordinary was I added a Goolge Cloud Drive

I did ... and it works .... but only on folder/file at that time.
New folders files still get saved with box ticked.

I just went through the tutorial again step by step ....... I can untick the 'Encrypt contents....'
I click OK ..... box closes .... but when I then try to do the last step 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolder and files'

All saved file now have padlock icon-options.jpg

That fails with error (see attached)

I have tried 'ignore' then it rattles through applying attributes to a load of files.

    additional information ....
Just download new zipped folder .. you can see it does not have the icon issue when in Download folder.

It does though appear as soon as I move to desktop ... and as before has set attribute to 'encrypt'

Perhaps you need to look further up the folder tree for folders with that checked.

    Or disable EFS altogether.

Enable or Disable NTFS File Encryption in Windows

Thank you so much, very useful feature. was looking for this long time. Every time i used to download something got encrypted, and could not play on my other PC/Laptop without decryption beforehead.

    # "Or disable EFS altogether. " I never knowingly enabled this, is it on by default ? .... and if so is there a reason NOT to disable it. ?

    # "New Comment Post #1" not sure what that means, I did not add that comment, maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean

    # ".. look further up the folder tree for folders with that checked."

I looked at C:\Users\Rick and encryption is not set. (see pic)
If I go down one level to C:\Users\Rick\Desktop then encryption is set, and while I can 'untick' it when I then try to apply (as per tutorial, I get the error :

All saved file now have padlock icon-error.jpg

    Additional test result
I just logged out and logged in on a different account (same physical PC)
The icon issues is not there on other accounts.

If you want to solve the problem it seems the only way for you to deal with it is to disable EFS.

Try that and see if it solves the problem.

The message you see about your desktop folder refers oddly to a file.
Is it possible there's a corrupt file on your desktop (in the desktop folder) that is preventing you from unchecking that option?

If you disable EFS you can investigate. (I don't know if you need to decrypt any files first - that would seem wise.).
Conversely, if you try to decrypt each file on your desktop (possibly in subfolders?) you might find one that cannot be decrypted.

I'll go though all files on desktop

    - - - Updated - - -

I had a thought (but failed)
I moved all items off desktop .... leaving only my user profile icon, trash & This PC icons
    Tried to remove 'encryption attribute'
Failed see error - also shows empty desk top only 3 files shown

When I moved files back ..... it has applied icon to every file.

Seems something specifc to the desktop folder and EFS

After creating a suitable backup, consider removing and reinstating your desktop folder.
