Getting icons not images in File Explorer

I am getting icons not images in File Explorer despite the setting show icons never thumbnails being unticked in folder options.

    What else can I do?

At the top, click "view", and then select either "Extra large icons, Large icons, or Medium icons". Those will show a small image of jpeg files. Is that what you're looking to have? You said you're "getting icons not images", so I assume you are wanting to see images.

Yes I am wanting to see images. It is set at the largest images but I just get icons.

The images are .cr2 files. When I did a batch conversion in Irfanview and put them in a new fold they were there as large images.

Well, I tried to help, but I could not get my version of IrfanView (4.51) to open a .CR2 file (obtained from the www), even after I had downloaded specific Canon DLLs - I keep getting a 'decode error' message. Maybe I need to update IrfanView?

OK, apparently I didn't post this. I have now updated to IrfanView 4.58, and after some struggling managed to install the plugins for CR2 files - and it manages to open them and shows an image which I think is from an internal jpeg thumbnail. I can save this, and perhaps do a batch conversion to jpeg (not tried), but I am not sure that the RAW image is being accessed. My guess is that you see only icons for the .CR2 files because Windows does not know how to open them, so cannot create its own thumbnails.

But now I have to take that back, as Windows is now showing me CR2 thumbnails - it wasn't earlier. Could the act of opening with IrfanView have created the thumbnails? Watch this space...

...later: downloaded another CR2 file, and opened it with IrfanView (no thumbnail appears), extracted embedded jpeg using exiftool.exe (as I did for the first two) - still no thumbnail. I don't understand it: nothing I can think to do now will make Windows generate a thumbnail image, of any size. If I ever get to the bottom of this, I'll pipe up.

Well it is now (sort of): I failed to get Windows to show me a thumbnail for the newest CR2 file, so after a lot of digging I downloaded a Microsoft Raw Image Extension from here:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/p/ra...%3Aoverviewtab
and once it was installed the absent thumbnail appeared. I still have no idea how the first two were generated. This article:
Microsoft releases Raw Image Extension to get raw image previews on Windows 10: Digital Photography Review
appears to confirm that without the extension, W10 has no CR2 (et al) image capability
