Search results menu colours have gone dark

While typing in the search bar today, I must have accidentally hit something that changed the colours of the search results menu. Normally, it has a light background with black text, but now it has a dark background with white text. I've done some searching and looked at some colour settings, but cannot find a solution. My Windows version number is 19043.1288.

You have somehow switched on Dark Mode - there is not usually a shortcut key for this but some laptops do have their own Hot Keys added by the manufacturer

If you use the windows key + I and follow the prompts in the settings you should be able to manually reset this

    Full instructions here

For your info here is a list of the default windows hotkeys

Thanks for the reply, although I still can't seem to solve my problem. I've had the PC for two years now, and my colour settings were customised. The default Windows mode was set to dark, while the default app mode was set to light. When I clicked the search box, the menu that appeared was dark with white text, but after typing something into the search box, the menu would turn light with black text. I think I must have hit the wrong key while typing, because now the menu stays dark even after typing in the search box.

Basically, I used to be able to have my search results appear light despite the default Windows mode being dark. Somehow, I've lost that ability.

Hi, I'm not aware of a specific way to change that - either way - can't find one anyway.

Have you tried using a System Restore point?

Both my system and default apps settings have been dark for a long time, yet the search results always have a white background - which of course I wish would follow my settings and be dark.

    EDIT:
Do you happen to have a preview build? N/M because this is old, but related. Windows 10 is finally getting dark theme improvements in new update

I wish I could trade colors with you

    Just tried it. No luck.

As far as I'm aware, I don't have a preview build. I actually saw that article while trying to find a solution myself. In a way, it's funny that this happened against my wishes when there are some people who wish they could get it to happen on purpose. I can put up with this change if need be, but I liked having a light search menu without having to have all of Windows in light mode.

If you create a new user for test purposes and log in as that user, what do you see?

Considering the restore point, presumably restoring completed successfully, and the date it was created was before this happened- is that correct?

Looks like it's a 'Server Side' update. Not unlike the changes to the Settings Banner a while back and independent of any downloaded Windows Update.

This from an article from the same site but posted today:

Microsoft is rolling dark mode for Windows 10 Search

... it looks like Microsoft is finally rolling out a new server-side update to enable dark mode support for Windows Search.

My guess you'll get this if you choose:

Personalization > Colors > Choose your color > Dark

    or like the OP

Personalization > Colors > Choose your color > Custom > Windows Mode > Dark

And, like the 'Settings Banner' change, users with similar Personalizations will wake up seeing this change soon.

Thanks for the link and details - I'll be looking forward to this.
