More than this, Microsoft also appears to be internally testing rounded corners and other improvements for Windows 10’s design. The goal is to fix the consistency issues with Windows 10’s interface and add a dark mode where it’s missing currently.
    - also noted that from that article.

Surely they're not trying to dissuade people from upgrading to Win 11?

    Not exactly a new idea...

    - except to me that still looks a whole lot better..

If you create a new user for test purposes and log in as that user, what do you see?

Considering the restore point, presumably restoring completed successfully, and the date it was created was before this happened- is that correct?
Yeah, the restore point I used was from last Saturday. The search menu still appeared dark. How do I go about creating a new user to test it? I saw a few different options and wasn't sure which was the way to go.

Correction- just retried.. mine's gone dark too!

    So I wouldn't bother.

I have 19044.1288, but I have preview build updates disabled.

Interesting. That makes me wonder if the change happened on its own rather than because of anything I did. I probably should've mentioned this sooner, but I had my eyes focused elsewhere as I was typing and only thought to look at the menu when I realised I'd accidentally pressed [ instead of p. That was when I noticed the dark menu.

As suggested above, seems a server side change. As you've shown it's unaffected by System Restore, that rather confirms that.

    This setting does change it:

I'm sick of this dark mode inflicted on us. I do not work in a funeral home or want the dark version. However switching to light makes the whole area a very bright white. i want it how it was before ! I had previously made no changes to the options.. Now Microsoft Edge is in dark mode by default ,although this can be changed. Firefox adopted a purple screen. selecting light scheme makes screen very light , default mode seems to be black so thats what I have it set too, reluctantly.
    I also don't like:

Both my system and default apps settings have been dark for a long time, yet the search results always have a white background - which of course I wish would follow my settings and be dark.
There's this but I have not tested because I use light theme anyway.

Thanks for the links. I'll update if I try them.

I've discovered that my two backup accounts show search results with dark background - there's something about my main account that's causing the light background.

Feeling left out, I did my first reboot of the day and as expected with settings similar to the OP:

Personalization > Colors > Choose your color > Custom > default Windows mode > Dark

... my Start Search has gone Dark too.

I was particular curious after seeing post #19 . But was pleased that my context menus remain Light and follow my 'default App Mode > Light' directive.
