Now every time I click on Windows explorer it opens the window but will not show contents for a loooong time.
It says "working on it.." and the green bar comes but slowly increments.
It used to do this for my download folder only , but then it evolved to all folders.
And, yes, I have space, 67,000,000,000 bytes free to be precise. And its a solid state drive. : s

Does the same problem occur if you log in to a second account on your PC? Create one if necessary - always good to have a backup account for testing and in case your main account gets corrupted.
There's generally no reason to disable search indexing, but you can go to search settings and pause indexing as a test to see if that fixes the slowness. I have indexing enabled on all my PCs because I use Windows Search every time I use my PC. And I have no slowness issues as you are experiencing.
Check Windows Search settings to see if it's currently indexing files - if it shows 0 pending files, it finished indexing all your files.

Another suggestion would be to look in theTask Manager, just to see if ANYTHING stands out as possibly causing the delay . . .
