And reinstalling the display driver? [using the driver provided by the computer maker if the display adapter was part of the computer when you bought it]

I appreciate that you need to sort out the current problem before thinking about the future but do then consider making regular system images.

Did you update all drivers, including the video driver?
The only driver updates available on the Gigabyte website for my motherboard were the chipset and audio drivers. I guess I must already have the latest video driver?

Situations like this is why we recommend making frequent backups with Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect
I would try what I suggested in my last post - in-place repair upgrade.
Presumably the in-place repair upgrade will trash all of my applications? That would certainly be a nuclear option as I've amassed an awful lot of applications.
I did have a monthly Macrium image backup scheduled but I just noticed that it hasn't run successfully since April :0(

Depends on your PC and video card. Did they make the PC? If not, you have to find out what video card you have and check that manufacturer's website for your video card driver.

No, you didn't read my post or look at the tutorial.

But before doing that, check your video driver as it could be the simple solution.

Reinstall it to bowl out the possibility that it is no longer operating correctly.

    Best of luck,

OK I'll reinstall the video driver. Sorry - I hadn't yet read the instructions for the Repair Install (I was working from memory of doing something similar a few years ago).
As a matter of interest, do you know why Windows 10 doesn't provide a restore point for the time immediately prior to each monthly update? As updates are now enforced, it would seem to be a sensible measure to mitigate the effects of more catastrophic updates

Create System Restore Point in Windows 10 read this - it contains a good explanation of restore points - not a substitute for making backups, unfortunately

    Because

When you get a new large or feature update for Windows 10, all restore points will automatically get deleted in the process of the update since the old restore points will be incompatible with the new Windows Update.
[taken from the tutorial Steve posted a link to].

System images are the reliable form of OS backup. It is well worth regarding Restore points as tools that might come in handy sometimes, in certain circumstances, [insert your own list of ifs, buts & maybes]

    All the best,

So I just got a repeat of the error while copying files: "Insufficient quota to complete the requested service".
The timing could be coincidental, but I've never seen that error before.
