Windows 10 is supported until 2025, so it is far from "obsolete"
Did open the link in post #5? it suggest you can turn off the Windows Update Service under Services. You will never get another Windows Update, that should make you happy. But probably make your computer vulnerable to attack.

Microsoft are intrusive and sometimes aggressive when it comes to updating and my recent find that they have been pushing updates while I was supposed to be sleeping is disturbing to say the least.
I just used Sordum.org's Windows Update Blocker... a simple, portable, free one (or two) click solution to stopping Windows Updates until a time that was convenient to ME, not Microsoft.

I've been using this for ages now without any issues. I just can't be bothered with all the fuss about hiding some updates and only allowing others. I prefer to let others test-drive MS' efforts before letting them loose on my devices after I've used Macrium Reflect Free to save a backup image.

Best of luck with Linux. I've used Linux Mint Cinnamon for years and like it... although it's not without its issues when trying to scan or connect to shared network resources. I've resolved them... but it took a bit of detective work first.

Just recently I've been testing Windowsfx... (see here for review by Jack Wallen on TechRepublic.com) the only Linux distro so far that has discovered and connected to shared resources on my Windows devices without any configuration whatsoever. It was a bit time-consuming to set up by comparison to other distros... but only because of the slow download speeds of required components.

@spunk I think you should re read the first message to this thread....I have tried ending all the updates by stopping them altogether.....Microsoft have decided to do their own thing....they start my laptop up without permission and install updates regardless. Hence me messaging in this forum in the first place. It appears that Microsoft do not like being told "NO" and do their own thing. Can we please not get sidetracked here? I thank you for your advice but I don't actually agree with you....is that ok? Its not personal.

@RickC thank you for your advice, I shall certainly look into it but to be fair, I am over the drama with Microsoft, they have shown me they cannot be trusted so yep I am pretty much doing away with them altogether. It does not seem right to me to have to install software to stop Microsoft from invading my computer, to be honest that's a bit like having chemo to kill cancer. I think the easiest solution is get rid of the problem altogether.

Thank you for the heads up on Linux, I have read a little about the issues with printing services....I guess both operating systems are not without problems. As long as Linux does not try to force their updates on me I will be happy. I am very grateful for the advice that everyone has offered.
