Using 7Z with system image get access is denied to XML files

Running version 21H1. Using 7Z to compress system image backup and apply a password for my new off-site location. Complete backup for the system copied to a brand new USB external drive. Every try results in access is denied for the XML files located in the Backup folder but everything else just chugs along. I can get it to work only by specifically adding myself to the permissions for an XML file. My user is in the administrators group. Have tried all the normal tricks with permissions but there must be something better.

It going to be lots of work to add myself to each XML file. And of course the names will change.

Why not create an Image file using Macrium Reflect or your Favorite Clone software?

You really should not be using Microsoft's System Image Backup any more. It has been a deprecated feature for more than four years. Microsoft themselves recommend you use something else.

Macrium Reflect Free has a much more efficient compression, typically a Microsoft System Image will be the size of the used data on the partitions being imaged, with Macrium Reflect the image will be about 50%-60% of that size. Plus a Macrium image is a single .mrimg file, not a folder full of .xml files, catalog files and metadata. Not only that, but Reflect Free has password protection built in. Reflect Free is licensed for both commercial and home use.

    7Z fix and Macrium test

Got 7Z to work by starting the program with a right-click, more, run as Administrator. Then compressed with a password.

Also tried Macrium personal free - seemed to work fine. I just never used it before. I tried to do a VirtualBox compatible backup but that's not an option at least in the free version. Looks like V8 will support Oracle VM - other projects are ahead of this work in my queue.

    File sizes:
    Win Image folder: 391GB
    Macrium: 215GB
    7Z: 148GB

Reflect v7 Free includes viBoot which allows you to run a .mrimg file as a Hyper-V virtual machine. Reflect v8 adds support for running as a VirtulBox VM.

The Free version of v8 will also include viBoot, but Reflect v8 Free is not available yet. You could install the 30-day trial of v8 Home, at the end of the trial you are given a choice of purchasing v8 Home or letting it revert to the v8 Free edition.

Alternatively, with any edition you could always make the Reflect recovery media ISO, boot your VM from this, then use it to restore a Macrium image to the VM.

To complete the picture you should also include the time taken with 7Z and MT to make the backup.
There is also a high compression option with MR but it is slower.

It may be a question of convenience. For me MR wins out.

PS. That is a large size for your OS partition. If it also contains data you may want to think about separating them and altering the backup strategy.

The backup size is both the SSD boot drive and a physically separate HDD. Many years ago I started always using a separate DATA drive both on my own systems and when I configured them for customers. Just makes life a lot easier.

Thanks much to everyone. I contacted Macrium for a quote as I have lots of Windows 10 systems.
