Rogue computer W10 1803 not installing Windows 10 1909 any version

    Hi there

Got a rogue machine which wouldn't install any W10 version after 1803 (either MBR or UEFI) -- error was always BSOD with messages like "inacessible / missing boot device" or similar.

    Finally solved it

I had 1 SSD connected to MOBO, another using the old SATA DVD port -- and 4 Linux "Spinners" for a load of multi-media data served by using a Linux VM.

The wretched Windows installer got hosed up I think not by the Linux HDD's (simply offline) but with the SSD's - the one connected to the old DVD port.

Probably on Windows 10 ver 1803 people were still massively using DVD's and the like.

Anyway managed finally to update to 20H2 1909 by unplugging the Linux HDD's (in RAID 0 combo) and the SSD connected to the DVD port.

Cloned an old 1803 W10 system to the single connected SSD drive (directly to the mobo) , and managed to update.

Re-attached the DVD port connected SSD and the Linux HDD's.
    VM OK - everything running.

Though what a mess !!!! A W10 update shouldn't go through that ghastly mess.

I'm not even THINKING of attempting W11 on this machine. At least "I'm saving the planet slightly by not sending this reasonably decent machine to the Tip". !!!

    Cheers

The problem is updating from old out of support systems as files need for update are out of date

    Hi there
Actually that wasn't the problem -- the computer NEVER updated even when 1803 was current and updates to 1809 / 1909 being offered and updated -- it always bombed out BSOD -- "Inacessible boot Device". I only decided to have another go with this as I really didn't want to chuck away perfectly good hardware -- if an old MBR computer (3 years older) could run W10 properly this one should have been able to as well.

Plenty of available 1909 / later isos for W10 available on UUPDUMP.

    Hi there
sequel to this -- next update -- took 45 mins and now won't boot

I've decided for all sorts of reasons to junk this machine and use a 4 HDD RAID enclosure (170 EUR) on my older 2014 INTEL MBR system for the NAS serving functions --I've never had a smidgen of a problem with that ancient system even 24/7 with a lowly 2.4 2 core GHZ Celeron CPU but the other AMD system -- 100% POS from beginning to end even though it was 4 years newer and a more powerful 4 core CPU. Goodbye and Good riddance to it -- and usually I keep old hardware until even a museum couldn't use it.

For me "Never again AMD stuff" at whatever price the alternative costs. OK For others I know YMMV but that's been my usually horrific experiences with AMD vs INTEL.

Maybe you meant 1909 19H2? There is no 20H2 1909 version.
Windows 10 1909 is no longer supported by Microsoft since last May. So, you are still not updated. Windows 10 version history - Wikipedia
As stated, when you have an outdated version, it is difficult to Update it. With an old version like 1809 if it fails, Create a backup of your User files, then do a Clean Install; after that is complete restore your Backup. It would be the Same with Windows 11 unless you had the latest version of Windows 10 before upgrading.

Did all that Clean install failed -- even on the oldest "Valid" system but I managed to get one that could actually re-boot and then download updates -- after taking nearly 2 hrs for the wretched system updates -- (normally takes on decent system no more than 10 - 15 mins) -- it went through all the updates -- then on re-boot the system couldn't even find the boot disk system.

I'm off to the "Tip" tomorrow and guess what is getting taken to it !!!! -- Have a look at my previous post on an old INTEL system.

Did you try a different SATA cable? Did you try a different Power Plug? Did you try a different SATA port on the motherboard? It sounds like one of the Windows Updates is borking your SSD. Maybe the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver?
