𝐔𝐑𝐋 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐂𝐔𝐓𝐒 𝐃𝐎𝐍'𝐓 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊, open printer dialogue.

Well it appears MS keep breaking what always worked
Since building new W10 machine I have never been able to create a desktop shortcut to a web page. None of the options for this create a functional shortcut. They all open the printer dialogue not web site.
    I have tried >>
    • New shortcut from right click, pasted in the url.
    • I have gone to page in browser, dragged shortcut to desktop.
    • I checked default programs and it is set .url to open web browser.

None of the available options will create a functional shortcut that works on W10.

    • I created shortcut on W7 machine and copied to the W10 machine where it opens printer not web
    • I copied shortcut from W10 over to W7 machine and it works fine over there.

It appears it has NOTHING to do with the shortcut, rather a bug or some error in Win10 itself.

I have found a lot of people have this but other than them saying "try this, try that" and instructions on how to do what I already did, no one has ever posted a fix for this.
Some suggest trying "open with" but there is no such option.

Please do not reply with the same set of instructions as to how it is "SUPPOSED" to work....I know that. I want to know how to fix it when what is supposed to work DOES NOT WORK?
Is this needing some registry fix?
    Thanks much...

I had posted but deleted it, missed the part about the printer and don't see how it fit in with a URL.

I'm assuming maybe your current web browser may have a problem.
Try this: Download a different web browser, and set it as your Default Web Browser. Now right click -> New Shortcut, and try to see if it opens properly in your new web browser.
If it opens properly, then your current web browser has an issue. Try to repair it. See if there is a "repair" option. If not, uninstall & reinstall current web browser.

Not browser problem is Win10 problem

It is not a browser problem.

    Same issue with any browser.

Clicking .url shortcut opens printer dialogue not web browser.

Default for .url is set for web browser.

I can copy a working browser from another machine and still opens printer not web. Move that back to the original machine and it works fine.

I am not going to mess around with add-ons like context menu "open with" as that does not fix the bug in Win10 causing shortcut to open printer dialogue.

    Paul,

I'm amazed by this problem. I have not heard of it before.

If the problem also happens in
    - another user account Add Local Account ... - TenForumsTutorials
    - Safe mode Boot into Safe Mode - TenForumsTutorials
    then I'd
    - run SFC SFC - TenForumsTutorials
    - run a Repair install Repair Install - TenForumsTutorials

Works fine for me: Firefox, click and drag url to desktop, close Firefox, click on shortcut. Firefox is set as default browser.

    Please read the problem

There is NO PROBLEM creating a short cut. All methods create correct shortcuts.
Window is supposed to open the default web browser to the page in the short cut...not open printer dialogue.
I do not need instruction on creating a short cut but thanks. I've been using Windows since DOS days then 3.1. I'm old!
The problem is NOT within the short cut it is within the OS.
I already spent 3.5 hours in chat with MS support but all level one support has is a bag of shit to throw at the wall in the hopes one splat fixes it with no understanding of what the problem is.
As of now I have to log in to chat again ( 4th time today) to contact second level support.
So far wasted hours while Level One just keep trying same crap over and over and over hoping they got lucky. Even did an in place update from .iso file. Nothing fixed. Created new user. Problem is not related to the user account.
url shortcuts do nothing at all in safe mode.
If T2 has any luck and if they can explain what the problem is I will try to get info to share here.
I'm not very confident...Starting to think MS created their own Frankenstein and now it is out of their control.
