Which background app is running through my VPN?

Whenever I use my VPN I disable Win 10 "Background apps" otherwise I get warning emails from Microsoft regarding unrecognized login attempts. Nonetheless, if I stay on long enough I eventually get such an email from Hotmail.

Any ideas on what could still be running in the background to cause this? Thanks.

I'd have thought those disabled with "Background apps" turned off.

(My post is for informational purposes)

Oh I've had a similar problem.

I have a Hotmail account, and I use an app called Howard E-mail Notifier. It sits in the notification area as an icon, and checks for new emails every 5 seconds. Whenever I use a VPN that takes control of all internet connections in the computer, Howard notifies me on a new email from Microsoft saying a new strange login was attempted on my Hotmail account (because of the completely different IP address [of the VPN] using Howard to check for new emails).

My solution for that is to close Howard whenever opening the VPN app.

So your solution would be to somehow log yourself out of whatever is using your Hotmail account whenever using the VPN. Not sure exactly what app you have that's causing this, but that's the general solution to this scenario. That certain app should be logged out before using the VPN.

That's my opinion on this matter.

Agreed, but somehow I need to figure out which app it is.

Disable your startups and use a process of elimination to try to find the one responsible.

pepanee's experience with sites complaining about a suspicious login from a new location is typical of those sites that maintain a record of IP addresses. I switch my router off at night, and occasionally certain sites pick up the change of IP address.
