Force always start in flight mode

If I wanted the laptop to always start in flight mode would this be a sensible way to automate it ?

On shutdown run a reg file to turn on flight mode.
Assuming it will restart in previous (flight mode) state.

    Would this be done from "Win+R > gpedit.msc > ComputerConfig > Scripts > Shutdown ...."?

Thanks again to BRINK for his reg file
    Turn_on_airplane_mode.reg
from tutorial Turn On or Off Airplane Mode in Windows 10

But I dont know how to do this correctly ...
I can see the window "Shutdown Properties" and button "Show Files" and the space for "Name/Parameters" and the two tabs "Scripts/PowerShell Scripts"

Then can manually turn on radios as needed (preferred result).
    Dell 5580 with 20H1 up-to-date.

I do not quite understand what you are aiming for in this
If you use the reg file to turn off the wireless on shutdown. then you are going to have to use it again to turn it on
Then can manually turn on radios as needed (preferred result).
I am simply at a loss to understand the purpose of the exercise.

If you could explain that - then advice would I am sure be easier.

    Thank you Macboatmaster
Purpose is to simply avoid clicking flight-mode before sign-out/restart/shutdown so that the machine always starts in flight mode.
Such that I can rely on machine being off-line until I choose to put it on-line..... just another thing to not have to remember really.
Was not aware that the reg file approach could not be undone by clicking flight-mode button to off when back on desktop.
So this method is clearly no-use then ?
No worries, will just have to remember.

I do not think you can simply click to turn flight mode off after using reg file
However to be certain you would have to check yourself

    Thank you Macboatmaster

Just did a rough test and am now more puzzled.
    Following Brink's tutorial ...
Turn On or Off Airplane Mode in Windows 10
and specifically the section for the regfile method ...
The downloadable .reg files below will modify the DWORD value in the registry key below.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\RadioManagement\SystemRadioState
    (Default) DWORD
    0 = Off
    1 = On
I just changed the DWORD value a couple of times with odd results.

First puzzle was that before I changed anything the default was "0".
Changed it to "1" and restarted.
Result was flight mode icon now "on" but so was the wireless and was connected and active.
Was able to change state of flight mode button and wireless button at will.

So changed default DWORD back to "0" and ensured wireless was "on" and active and flight mode "off".
    Restarted.
Wireless back "on", flight mode "off".

Not worried that I expected "1" to equal "on" when it seems to equal "off" on this machine but rather that the flight mode can appear to be "on" but wireless remains fully active and functional when expected to be "off" (with only two states for the deafult DWORD surely one of them has to switch the radios off ?

Clearly need to follow through on the other combinations to do a proper test but initial results make no sense to me.

Normal behaviour of this machine is that clicking flight mode turns off the wireless and clicking again turns wireless back "on" and active.

BUT ... with flight mode button clicked and "on" followed by clicking WiFi button ... results in Wireless back "on" and active but flight mode remains "on".

So on this machine the flight mode is not all that it might/should be ?

I really miss my late Lenovo z61p from 2006 (still my best machine in my opinion). It had a sliding mechanical switch on the outside of the case for wireless ... on an aircraft just slide the switch before booting up. Oh so easy.

Anyway .... this is not a big deal .. just something that would have been useful.

EDIT: just posted that with both wifi and flight mode buttons enabled .....

    Try this
When you are going to shut down click the wifi icon on the notifications area and click disconnect
    Shut down and reboot
Of course until you do recommission you will have no browser and depending on how you sign in, that may also have problems, then when you wish connection - click what is now of course not the wifi symbol but the globe with the x
and then click your wireless connection on the list and click connect

    Thank you Macboatmaster.

But you have described the standard manual way of turning off WiFi which was what I was trying to automate at each restart/sign off/shutdown.
And having tested the reg DWORD change I have found puzzling results so still dont know why the tutorial by Brink suggests this method when I cannot seem to get the expected results.
In the interests of helping fellow low-altitude operatives such as me I am now trying the options on a second machine ...

    Starting from..
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\RadioManagement\SystemRadioState
    default DWORD = 0
    Current radio status is...
    wifi = 1 bluetooth = 1 flight = 0
Action centre shows wifi black for 1/on ... bluetooth black for 1/on ... flight grey for 0/off
Clicking bluetooth or wifi in actions turns each individually on or off.
Clicking flight in actions turns both bluetooth and wifi off.
    So far as expected.

So changed default DWORD to 1 (had hex selected first go then as decimal second go)
    Restart.
Actions show bluetooth, wifi and flight all as black/on.
    Machine is online.
Clicking flight once has no effect on wifi or bluetooth.
Clicking flight second time turns off bluetooth and wifi.
Clicking wifi and bluetooth changes those radio states but leaves flight black/on.
System tray shows flight mode regardless of wifi/bluetooth state.
Only clicking flight mode changes system tray icon. Still switches wifi and bluetooth states as expected.
So the button clicking still controls radio states but the display of flight mode can obscure the actual radio state.

Now clicked flight mode to black/on.
    Restart.
Still in flight mode with both bluetooth and wifi off.

Back to default DWORD = 0
    Flight mode is black/on.
    Restart.
This time actions shows flight/bluetooth/wifi as grey/off.
System tray shows globe and machine is offline.
Clicking flight on/off only changes flight button and has no effect on bluetooth or wifi.
Clicking bluetooth or wifi changes those radio states as expected so machine can be put online again.
When online the flight button works as expected to change bluetooth and wifi radio states.

Running out of time this morning to do more ...
But I still dont appreciate the purpose of this reg method as this machine still relies on previous radiostates prior to restart ... or have I missed something ?

Seems to me that the DWORD controls the flight mode button colour/on/off status but does not shut off the radios unless that was their states prior to restart.

Willing to accept that I have missed the point but still seeking an automated way to keep radios off without havig to remember flight mode at every restart/sign of/ shutdown.
Lazy perhaps but just trying for a bit of consistency.

With respect it is not the same effect as clicking flight mode
Good luck with it, as I said at the start, I cannot really see what you are trying to achieve.

OK ... leaving this topic but will just post a note/question to Brink's tutorial as I cannot get the reg file method to work the way he describes it.
    Over and out.
