At the risk of giving insult, you're aware that the slots are not numbered in sequence?
A quick Web search shows several fixes for hardware reserved memory, but I'm doubtful about them.
I think what I'd try is booting the machine with one stick of RAM. Try each of the 4 slots. (Even though there is one slot designated as optimal for booting with one DIMM.) That was how I diagnosed a defective motherboard last year.

It looks like one of the modules is bad. I tried both modules by themselves in each slot and one of the them booted fine each time, and the other didn't get to post in any of them. Thanks for the help.
