How to close all my folders under the THIS PC umbrella upon start up

I am still new to Windows 10. I find it very annoying whenever I open RECENT ITEMS with my RECENT ITEMS shortcut by or Explorer default. I have a lot folders showing up. I close (collapse) them at every start up, but isn't there a way keep this setting permanent?

RIght-click in the background of the Navigation Pane and uncheck:

    • Show all folders
    • Expand to open folder

My context menu items were already unticked, but still showing up the details like the OP.

So, ticked them > closed Explorer > open Explorer, unticked them > closed and re-opened Explorer > now shows up like the OP wants (closed folders)

Do you have an illustration to show exactly what you did? I'm confused on what you mean by context menu and you closed it.

I tried the above recommendation (which wasn't clear) from @KeithM.

When I use the SAVE AS command. For example in Chrome, I try to SAVE AS, everything is EXPANDED which is frustrating.

What I did was I opened EXPLORER, selected the VIEW Tab , went to the NAVIGATION PANE, EXPAND TO OPEN FOLDER, TICKED IT (ON) and unticked the rest. Still no go.

Generally the Save as item on the right-click of something like a page or an image will open an iteration of File Explorer to the last place something was saved, if a sub-sub-sub-folder of Documents [for example] was used that's were it will allow the next save. I just did it with this page to a folder on a NAS drive.

Hmm. I ddn't get that impression. What screeenshot of what precisely?

I was [hoping] @idgat would explain his post, but he never did. It seems either I'm not clear on the issue or others aren't understanding it eg. Berton's comment.

I will repeat: folders expand regardless of settings especially when accessing the shortcut called RECENT ITEMS.

My issue is with automatcially expanding folders not the SAVE as function.

A screenshot of the dialog showing the expanded folders. I think you're talking about the Navigation Pane, but you're not specific. If you are, capture the screenshot after right-clicking in the Navigation Pane to show the context menu:

Also, there is no Recent ITems shortcut in a default Win10
install. Where is this shortcut and how did you create it?

@KeithM. Thank you for your post. It's most informative.

I guess that's what I meant then — Navigation Pane. I can't provide a screenshot as I have many confidential titles/folders within the "Navigation Pane". However, if for example you take a screenshot (Snip & Stitch) renamed to Snipping Tool in W11, and try to save the file. You will see the Navigation Pane on the far right is fully expanded for THIS PC even though you DE-select [Expand to current folder]. This is incredibly frustrating and I never had this issue in Windows 7.

I created the Recent Items shortcut in W10 from tenforums.com.
