After installing new RAM I am experiencing many system issues

Just installed new RAM (4 x 32GB) and upon restarting Windows, the audio service isn't running and I can't restart it. I also see that I can't open the System app seeing instead this error window.

And I can't seem to update Windows. It's stuck on downloading. I suspect there are a number of other issues.
    I have tried using
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
but it found no errors. Same for
    Code:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    .

I haven't tried a full memory test yet, but reinstalling the old (and working) RAM does nothing.

Finally, beyond these issues, the system appears stable during use of the last several hours.

Any ideas what I can do besides a full Windows reinstall?

Windows version 2004 (OS Build 19401.1237)

    EDIT:
    Added update history

    - does nothing in what sense? Do you mean you experience the same problems?

    But then you say
the system appears stable during use of the last several hours.
    = everything's ok - with which RAM?

I find this a little confusing, I'm afraid. Thanks.

Apologies. Thanks for asking me to clarify.

Putting in the old RAM doesn't fix the problem. Still no audio etc.

And when I say it's stable, I mean that I'm not experiencing any blue screens of death or anything, which is what I would expect with seriously corrupted RAM. (The RAM is also new, so I wouldn't expect is to have many problems.)

EDIT: But I am still experiencing the audio etc. issues.

Thanks. Was the RAM change simply intended as an upgrade, and before changing that all was ok? And are you sure the new RAM is compatible?

And I can't seem to update Windows. It's stuck on downloading.
Prior to changing the RAM, were there any problems with Windows Update?

Suggest you do some basic disk checks in this sequence to establish a base line.
    a. Download and use Hard Disk Sentinel (excellent appraisal as a functional trial- valid for SSDs too) - portable or installable version as you prefer. Check the tab for each disk. Green is good.
    b. If ok, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt

Have a look at your Update History and post a screenshot.

If you have a problematic failed update, you can try this:
How to delete Downloaded, Failed & Pending Windows Updates

Is there any particular reason why you're still on build 2004?
Is Windows Update disabled in some manner? Do you prefer build 2004?
    Or is upgrading failing?

One issue I've seen with adding internal parts such as RAM, Add-in cards, etc., is in unplugging the power cable from the computer or power strip/wall socket then pressing the On|Off switch to drain off residual power. Not doing so can cause issues, some intermittent and some full failures.

You added 4 sticks 32gb each? total of 128gb?

If yes, did you look up your motherboard to see if it can do that much?

    Thanks for the reply.

Just to upgrade size, yes. It is DDR2666. MB allows that frequency. Not sure how else to check for compatibility. But switching to the previous RAM doesn't fix the problem, and since it's stable otherwise, I assume the RAM is compatible.

Not that am aware of. I have delayed new updates simply to ensure stability of the machine and to avoid automatic restarting, so that has made my version somewhat behind. I'm not holding specifically to this version.

Thanks. The overview for my drive says 100% performance and 77% health (looks to be measured by "Percentage Of The Rated Lifetime Used").

Thanks, yes, the spec sheets says it can manage 128 GB. I plan to run a memtest on it tonight. And so far, it is running with all 128 GB visible.

This is a good point. Thanks. I didn't unplug, but I always hit the off switch on the power supply before making any changes.

    The RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z Royal Series 128GB (4 x 32GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) Intel XMP 2.0 Desktop Memory Model F4-2666C19Q-128GTRS - Newegg.com

The MB: Specification X470 GAMING PRO | MSI Global - The Leading Brand in High-end Gaming & Professional Creation

Looking on G.Skill's website shows that a slightly different RAM set is compatible i.e., F4-2666C18Q-128GTRS instead of F4-2666C19Q-128GTRS, which is what's currently installed - AFAIK the only difference is the timing is 18-18-18-43 instead of 19-19-19-43. This seems pretty minor for a difference but I could be wrong.

Can't seem to edit original post.

After some quick memtest86 testing, I found that 1 of the new DIMMs appears to fail. But I'm not sure how that causes these system-wide errors since they are still there with the original (and presumably good) RAM.

Your Update History is clean- but you seem stuck on 2004. For whatever reason it seems you've not been offered an upgrade beyond that.

Perhaps the one question not answered is
Is there any particular reason why you're still on build 2004?

    - but perhaps you have no control of that- that could be an MS Safeguard Hold, I suppose.

You can try an in-place upgrade repair install of build 2004 which keeps all progs and data like any upgrade.
Check you have at least 30Gb free on C:
Download a MS 2004 iso file using the Heidoc iso downloader (Google, free) as per tenforums tutorial.
    Rt click iso
    Click Mount
    Open new drive letter created
    Double click setup.exe

At this stage given Windows Update is working, upgrading to a later build could add risk.
