    Recycle Bin Issue

    Running Windows 10 version 20H2 64-bit

I have thousands of files in my Recycle bin. I'm reluctant to delete them. When I view the Recycle bin in Windows File Explorer, it is either very slow to finish loading - the green bar at the top takes a long time to get to the right-hand end. Sometimes the computer freezes. I have listed the files using the command prompt, but they mostly have names beginning with $ and which don't mean anything. Is there a way I can save the files, with their original names, to a disk drive (not C:)?

(As a bit of background, many of the files got into the recycle bin when I ran the dupeguru duplicate file finder program on all my HDDs and told it to delete all the copies to the recycle bin. But I think some of the files it deleted weren't copies.)

    Thanks

The main issue with deleting a file is that only the first letter of it is changed so restoring can be daunting if that original file name isn't remembered. Sending to the Recycle Bin is a safety intended to avoid permanently losing it. One can permanently delete a file but that can be dangerous. In the days of DOS a file wasn't truly deleted, was only marked as deleted until needing the space on the hard drive for another file at which time it was overwritten and gone. The Recycle Bin is quite similar except with a graphical interface/view. If the files are still in the Bin has it been tried to restore them? As to the 'thousands' of files, there is a limit/user setting to how many/how much can be stored. Right-click it and Properties.

You should not be sending items to your recycle bin unless you want to delete them.
