    USB recovery drive - help!!!

I have just created a recovery USB drive (took about an hour to do and files/folders look ok to me).
I then went to check it works by changing my boot order to USB and restarting my PC with the USB stick in a USB port. Everything seemed to boot up fine to my home screen etc (there is nothing actually wrong with my system - I am just creating this recovery drive "in case").

My only query is this:- from tutorials I have seen I was expecting it to boot up to a blue screen with various Options listed, like "Choosing Keyboard/Troubleshoot/System Restore etc etc. Should my new recovery drive do this or is it correct that it boots up as normal if there are no Windows 10 faults?? Please tell me.

I run Windows 10 64 bit Home edition build 19042.1052

    Thanks

Thanks for such a quick response. I looked at the link you sent and am still puzzled. The blue screens shown are what I expected to see when I booted up from my USB stick so, again, my question is
    a) Why is it going to my normal home screen settings????
    b) I made the recovery USB via Windows/Recovery/Make a recovery drive settings - is this the normal way?

What else should I be doing or am I getting the home screen because there's nothing to fix. Pls answer question.

Please see from 'Here's how' in the second tutorial which shows how to make one. You can check what you did.
    Pls answer question.
No comment to make, sorry. Which is why there was none...

This means that the computer is not booting from the Flash drive, it is still booting from the internal Windows Drive.
As stated, check the second link in post # 2 and trace your steps to see if you are missing something.
You can also create a Windows Installer by downloading the Windows 10 ISO image and burning it to a USB Flash drive with the Media Creation Tool from the same site. When you boot off of the Windows installer, you choose your Language and then in the next windows press Repair Your Computer. This will bring up the Troubleshooting menu, Click Advanced for the various choices.

No, the fact that there is nothing to fix is not affecting what you see.

    Do you have access to
    - Another computer that you can use to prove the Recovery drive works?
    - Another bootable USB that has worked before that you can use to prove that your method for booting to USB is correct?
    - - If you are in any doubt about this then posting a photo of the 'Boot options menu' might be worthwhile.
    - - Whilst I think your Bios key is F10 & you have used that already, you can also use F9 during boot to get to the 'Boot options menu'. If your USB does not appear in it then your computer does not recognise it as a device it can boot from.

    Best of luck,

    recovery usb drive

Denis, I'll give it a try later .....however, I thought that recovery USB will only work on the computer it was made on, no??
My only other compute is a Dell laptop so I will have to try it on that, even though it was not the "originating" machine.

You are right to be cautious and I should have mentioned that it is only alright because you are not going to take any action on the Dell but are merely going to check that it boots & you see the expected menus.
    - Both need to be 64 bit OSes or both need to be 32 bit OSes [possibly it might also work if this is a 32 bit OS & the Dell is 64 bit, I don't know but if it was the wrong 'type' I think you would at least get a fairly clear error message telling you to get lost - and that error message would prove the USB worked].

On Dells, the Bios is entered by tapping F2 repeatedly during boot whilst the Dell logo is onscreen and the 'Boot options menu' is shown if you tap F12 repeatedly during boot whilst the Dell logo is onscreen.
    - You need to check in the Dell Bios that it also has Secure boot turned off [as you have already done on your HP]. That's the only reason I mentioned the F2 key because it's the F12 'Boot options menu' that I think is going to be more revealing.
    - If it's anything like my Dell Bios, you might see a warning when trying to disable Secure boot that you must also disable something else [I think? it was PTT] so you'll just have to do what they want.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    USB recovery disk problem

Thanx for advice. I have now made two separate recovery USB drives. I reset the boot order etc and, hey presto, both drives boot up to the opening blue screen ok.

The only problem I now seem to have is that when going to initially set keyboard options I have no mouse or keyboard cursor. I have tried with both my cordless mouse and a wired one - nothing ! Using the keyboard to navigate does not work either.

So, can anyone help on this problem as, with no navigation through the screens, I would get nowhere in the event of a recovery.
Please advise on anything that would fix this problem (it does not happen at all when booting normally into my working setup).

Hi, do you have a USB2 port available? I imagine this is a problem of USB3 port or device with no appropriate driver.

    See e.g.
How-To: Add drivers manually to USB drive to install Windows using a USB 3.0 Port - Windows 7 Forum - Spiceworks

I can't say how well this fits with a recovery drive in particular, and the absence of a cursor seems odd.
