i had an external HDD
I was doing the right thing of naming the folder to something better.
something happened
where the folder did not stay
got lost
could not undo operation.
tried to search folder by old name
and date of contents.
Is there any reason why the computer would delete your whole folder of files while just renaming them.
and is there a way to find the folder.

Hi, sorry to hear of your problem. Trying to imagine what might have happened is too speculative.
You could try searching instead for one of the files in your folder- for example even if you know a partial name or just the file type. for example.
If you think the folder has been deleted, you could try a recovery program such as Recuva (free).
Again, you would need to choose what to look for.
There are two types of scans, fast and a much slower deep scan.
If the files have been overwritten, you will see an indication of the quality of what haas been found.
Maybe the folder has become hidden.
Control Panel>File Explorer Options>View>Show hidden Files, Folders.
If you know the name of one of the files inside the folder, you can do a search for it, that will reveal where the file is.
