Older Win 10 Desktop shutting down spontaneously

    Hello,

I have an older desktop that I built myself that has been having independent shutdown problems for some time. The presenting symptom started with a quick shut down right after boot was initiated, with a quick restart after that. Next, the desktop started to shut down while I was working. At times this seemed to accompany more extensive loads on the video card, but not always. This morning, the computer got caught in a loop during the boot cycle, wherein it would keep starting and shutting down, never able to fully load windows 10. As I cannot get it to boot I am unsure as to the OS Version number (1909?) or even many hardware/driver specifics.
I had tried to find out what was causing the fault on my own but was never able to figure out if it was a problem with the power supply, video card or some driver issue. I would like to fix it, but am not sur where to start at this point.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Don W

Do you have a bootable USB (flash) drive?

Booting from that would let you get in, to restore an image, use a Restore Point, or various other things.

    Hi,

    From your description,

Check If your machine is not over heating, Verify if air circulation is sufficient.

Inspect mother board and video card visually for Busting capacitators.

    re over heating

Thanks for you consideration of my issue. As shutdowns are kicking in at boot now (start, shutdown, start, shutdown at 20 second intervals in a loop) , I'm not sure there is time for overheating, but the capacitor vulnerability is intriguing . I have Core Temp running on the machine & do not think CPU temps we elevated enough for a forced shutdown. As the box worked for a couple of years with a single shutdown glitch at to the top of the boot initiation (boot starts, runs for 10 seconds, shuts down, then boots as normal), then progressed to shutting down after being on for 30 minutes - a few hours, & know is looping over and over back at the top of the boot cycle, it does "feel" like some protection circuit or hardware glitch. Mystifying.

Are you able to enter the BIOS and remain there without any shutdowns?
If so then your operating system is faulty and you should use a recovery drive to try and repair.
If that does not work, then a clean install might be the better option, considering the problem has existed for quite a while.

Could be overheating due to dust build up or poor air flow or a problem with the PSU
