Predictions of Windows 11 market share relative to Windows 10

The following are market share plots for Windows since January 2009. Can anything that has happened in the last twelve years be a predictor of what will happen in the next twelve years? Any predictions of how fast Windows 11 will be adopted? Will history repeat itself with people sticking with Windows 10 as long as possible like they did with Windows 7?

Note the data is only for desktops with Windows. Many people have shifted to using laptops instead of desktops in the last ten or 15 years. Would the results have been different if laptops had been included?

The Windows 7 usage is impressive, considering support ended for it at the beginning of 2020. (Excepting some corporations, if memory serves.)

Many companies have suffered financially in the last couple of years, so may not wish to divert staff and resources to upgrading.

The learning curve for Covid-hit firms might suggest migrating to Win 11 could be a low priority in the near future. Note the extended EOL support for LTSB:

The extended support end date for Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB is 13 October 2026.
Where companies' finances have been hit, the cost of replacing devices for the sake of compatibility with Win 11 might suggest they would wish to defer this. However, some companies have a policy of routinely replacing PCs at the end of an extended warranty period.

    Could keep IT admins busy..

I think people will stick with Windows 10 as long as possible (like they did with Windows 7) if early reports are anything to go by: -

Memory serves correctly. For their corporate customers Microsoft provide paid-for Extended Security Updates (ESU), renewable annually. ESU support ends on January 10, 2023.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/tro...ty-updates-faq

One side-effect of this ESU for the rest of us is that, although we don't get updates for the OS, Win7's Windows Update will continue to receive virus definitions, engine updates for MSE, and the MSRT until January 2023.

Microsoft will continue to release signature updates (including engine) to service systems currently running Microsoft Security Essentials until 2023.

It would be a reasonable assumption that a similar ESU program will be available for Win10 corporate customers after W10 reaches end of support in 2025.

    Hi,
Most see 7 eol as a well deserved holiday from researching updates lol
Still my main daily os on three computers, four really one is missing a gpu
Only one without win-7 is z490 and i use linux cinnamon 20.2 on it primarily.

As far as 11's market share
Well MS culled way too many machines compatibility for it to be any good lol

    Hi,
Doubt it matters seeing this is all insider nonsense installs
MS will be kicking people off in short order soon enough lol

I see no pressing reason to go to Windows 11. 10 works well for me and I dislike bells and whistles and distracting colours and images. I will keep it going on a VB out of interest.
