Thanks for the suggestions...I will work on getting that information. At issue is when I try to put the computer to sleep manually by selecting Start > Power > Sleep, the computer doesn't sleep for more than a second. As part of this process, I changed my power plan from "High Performance" (Put Computer to Sleep = Never) to Balanced (Put Computer to Sleep = 5 hours). When 5 hours was up, the computer did indeed go into Sleep mode automatically and successfully. Since then, when I manually try to put the computer into Sleep mode, it indeed stays asleep until roused. I then changed the Power Plan back to “High Performance” (Put Computer to Sleep = Never) and I can still put the computer into Sleep mode successfully.

It seems as if Windows forgot how to sleep when manually instructed, but re-gained the ability to do after it went into automatic sleep just once. Very odd.

So, from the info in this post, it sounds like Sleep is now working correctly. Is that right?

The powercfg -a will confirm the configuration of related settings that could impact the Sleep function.

Glad you have got this working properly now.

There is one more setting that can create mayhem :) Erp power saving! I setup a Gigabyte Brix With Lubuntu O/S for an elderly neighbour along our road, all working beautifully until I went home. I had a call .... I can't turn it off! , sure enough when I checked, the stupid thing would not stay in sleep mode or turn off (would boot up again after a few seconds). Much hair loss later it turned out to be Erp (Green Mode) power setting, was set to on by default, turning this off solved the problem.
I'm still trying to work out why "Green Mode" tries to keep the unit on all the time!!

My setting on current H270 is OFF

I finally determined what the cause of my PC waking up right after I invoke sleep function Start > Power > Sleep. I recently purchased a Velocifire wireless (2.4ghz) keyboard that also comes with a USB cord so it can be used in corded mode. When used in corded mode, sleeping the PC is not a problem. When I use the wireless dongle, the PC refuses to sleep for more than a second. So, the wireless mode of this keyboard is what triggers the problem. In addition to the things I've tried in my original post, here are the results of some suggestions you guys made:
    • Created a new fake user and logged in under than user. Same behavior.
    • Started PC in Safe Mode. Unfortunately, in Safe Mode sleep functions are limited to the monitor and hard drives. Nothing to put the PC to sleep.
    • Tried going into sleep via Alt + F4. Same behavior.
    • powercfg -a reports S3 is active on my system.

There are no obvious irregularities in Device Manager. The dongle shows up under USB Serial Bus Controllers as a USB Composite Device.
    • General Tab says "This device is working properly".
    • In Driver Tab, I tried searching for a better driver, but Windows says there is no better driver.
    • There is no Power Management tab.

So as it turns out, all of things I've tried appear to have been a waste of time as it was not addressing the wireless function of the keyboard. I contacted the manufacturer and they suggested that I delete the USB Composite Device entry, re-boot and re-insert the dongle. However, that did not change inability to sleep the PC.

    Any other ideas?

    Hi Jay

Just to clarify, this keyboard is the cause of your PC failing to stay in a Sleep state when it is using a Wireless USB dongle?

This would suggest the USB Host Controller or Root Hub is responsible.

Do you know if you have different types of USB ports and have you tried moving the dongle to different ports?

    I have the following Power Management tabs;

I've tried plugging directly into MB on the back port and front port, and indirectly via my USB hub. Below are my Device Manager shots. The one on the bottom relates to the offending wireless dongle.

    Hi Jay

Look in the Device Manager under Keyboards while your Wireless keyboard is connected.

There should be a specific entry for the Wireless keyboard.

Check properties for a Power Management tab.

I believe that a Wireless keyboard I once used had a DC power switch to save battery life, have you checked the underside for a tiny switch?

Another idea would be to check in the Bios settings for Enable USB Wake Support or something similar.
