Thanks for the suggestions...I will work on getting that information. At issue is when I try to put the computer to sleep manually by selecting Start > Power > Sleep, the computer doesn't sleep for more than a second. As part of this process, I changed my power plan from "High Performance" (Put Computer to Sleep = Never) to Balanced (Put Computer to Sleep = 5 hours). When 5 hours was up, the computer did indeed go into Sleep mode automatically and successfully. Since then, when I manually try to put the computer into Sleep mode, it indeed stays asleep until roused. I then changed the Power Plan back to “High Performance” (Put Computer to Sleep = Never) and I can still put the computer into Sleep mode successfully.
It seems as if Windows forgot how to sleep when manually instructed, but re-gained the ability to do after it went into automatic sleep just once. Very odd.
