Sounds like a rare glitch. Windows should halt the shut-down process and ask "Are you sure..." if there is a document open that has unsaved changes. Is it possible that you could have clicked on "Yes, continue shutting down" and thereby lost your changes? A momentary lapse of concentration maybe? Just a possibility?

Can you repeat this to see if it was a one-off or a real problem? Just open Notepad and type some gibberish. Then without closing Notepad, Restart or Shutdown.

so i do see that "are you sure message" for about a split second and then my whole screen gets covered by the Shutting Down or Restart message. it use to do what you're telling me but not anymore.

If you shutdown the computer and there is a document open with unsaved changes you should see a screen like the photo. Are you seeing this?

If you want to save a Document, I wouldn`t wait to see that screen. You should be saving it, and then verifying it.

    Hi McSweg

Following this tutorial will allow you to extend the 'hung app timeout'.

The default setting is 5000msec (5 seconds), perhaps your's has become set to a shorter time interval or you might prefer a longer setting.
