    File Explorer Graphic File "State" Annoyance


    I am a dinosaur, I started in computing when we worked in DOS. I have matured along with each new computer I purchased and each new version of operating system. I am currently using Windows 10 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1165).

    I have no idea what these little icons on every graphics file thumbnail is, but is there a setup option to get rid of these annoying images? (The White Checkmark on a Green Background.) On small images, these icons or whatever they are obscure the image I am trying to find.

    Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.

    Hello, this question recurs, with different types of overlays.

    As I said in another answer a few days ago, this can be due to a 3rd party program you have installed, or OneDrive, for example, depending on the icon (different programs have different icon sets).

    I don't know what progs you have running. Perhaps you have Norton 360 or similar.

    Typically certain backup and encryption programs use these to indicate the status. Inspect your running programs- which do you have in this category? Another group of such programs and Windows features that can do this relate to encryption. I think these are more likely to be one of the other two types.

    A Google search can help you.

    (Somewhat like you, I used DOS on Intel MDS's, but prior to those, paper tape and a 16 bit processor and a teletype terminal- disk drives were just round the corner)

    dalchina, Thank you very much for your reply. And I apologize for asking this again since it has been asked previously. I would have performed a search if I knew what to search for. I tried searching on File Explorer and couldn't find a question relating to my issue and most tutorials I have looked at are more for the beginner and too basic..

    Anyway, to answer your question, yes, unfortunately I do have Microsoft One Drive, though I do not use it and I have been trying to get rid of it, but it seems to be built into the Windows system too deep for me to disable completely. That must be the offending culprit. Or perhaps Norton 360, which I have relied on Norton products for many years. And I use Norton Backup also.

    I dislike all this extra baggage (annoyances, bloat ware) that software vendors add to their utilities. I understand it is to help the average user, but to me, it is all just a major pest.

    Onedrive...That must be the offending culprit.
    Onedrive icons: the one you showed is NOT one of these: I suggest that's related to Norton.

    Onedrive can be removed. It consists essentially of 2 parts- a program (or an app - there are both) on your PC, and your on-line Onedrive account. It can be annoying and intrusive.

    The prog or app can be disabled, then uninstalled.

    dalchina, the offending app was Norton, and I found how to disable the overlays and uninstall One Drive completely.

    Thank you very much for your help. I am back to being a happy dinosaur-aged Windows 10 User.

    Windows is a bit like a box of chocolates. They keep changing the selection, losing some of your favourites, and adding some flavours that just don't appeal or don't work. Sometimes it's necessary to be selective- or simply leave some aside.

    Wise.. Win 11 will take time to mature and Win 10 is supported into 2025.. Win 11 is 'clunkier' from my limited trials in a VM and offers nothing new bar its claims to increased security. It still has the version of Windows search MS broke from 1909 on (1903 was the 'best' build in my view- I still have one PC on that).

    I 'downgraded' this PC from 1903 to 21H1. Alas.
