    Removing contents of "C:\windows\servicing\packages"

Trying to free up some space on c:\ drive. I see several old files in "C:\windows\servicing\packages". They are older files and are mostly .cat and .mum files. Are these safe to remove.?? I searched the tutorial files and index and found nothing.
If safe to remove is there a procedure or just delete the files as admin.??

I don't know if it's safe or not (probably not) but for a few 10's of MB is it really worth bothering about?

Where you can potentially make substantial gains is to use Disk Clean up and click its button to clean up system files, particularly if it cleans up Windows Updates.

Open and Use Disk Cleanup in Windows 10

If that doesn't include the Windows Update cleanup, then you can do it yourself with DISM in a command prompt (Admin).

Clean Up Component Store (WinSxS folder) in Windows 10

Finally, there is another servicing folder where it is safe to delete the contents. You can safely delete any folders you see in C:\Windows\servicing\LCU. These are backups of the latest cumulative updates and can be a GB or more.

I always delete the contents of the LCU folder after a CU.

Before deleting the Packages folder, I would find out what`s creating the files and why.

A lot of them are dated back to 2019.

I googled it, but nothing useful came up.

This is mine on the X299, nothing to really worry about.

Still, it would be nice to know what they`re for.

I only have 40MB in the Packages folder so it's not worth worrying about. I routinely delete the contents of the LCU folder after each update. I noted in Windows 11 I have to take ownership of the folder before it can be deleted.

Well it seems we are all in the same boat. Yes I periodically delete the "LCU" folder, but the packages folder is a mystery.........

I have not been able to take ownership of the LCU folder in W11. I am logged in as administrator. Every option is greyed out and un-selectable.
