problem keeping file column order when copying to different drive

Hello, I have changed the order of the columns for my files (eg., for music files, I want the order to be title, album, artist, name, etc) and this order remains when I copy within the drive. But when I copy to a different drive, the file column order reverts to some default (name, etc). Is there any way to keep the revised order when I copy between drives, either within Windows 10 or is there a 3rd party software or app that can do this? I would appreciate very much any help that I can get on this.

You have to change the Sort Criteria in the folder or directory that you are pasting you music files into with the same parameters as the folder they came from before pasting

Thank you, Spunk, for your quick and helpful reply. If I am sending files to some one else, I take it that I would need to inform them to change the sort setup prior to downloading the files?

    cheers,

You can download a 3rd party app and adjust the Tags to all of your music files, and they would remain the same when you send them to others.

The settings you're talking about: columns displayed, column order, and (perhaps) sorting & grouping, are not saved with the files or directory. They are saved in the registry. The defaults can vary by FolderType: Generic, Documents, Music, etc. The defaults for each type can be cusstomized using Apply to folders.

From what you're describing, it sounds like you folders are using the Music template that at some point you customized uisng Apply to Folders. When you copy them within the drive, they'tre being content-sniffed and the Music template applied.

But perhaps on your other drive, at some point you set the root to Generic and checked the box that says "Also apply this template to all subfolders". Than enables "Inheritance." That would over-ride content-sniffing and apply the Generic template.

    So:
    • Check the Customize tab of the Properties dialog for the source folder.
    • Do the same for a copied folder that retains your desired seettings.
    • Do the same for a copied folder that loses your desired settings.

Try changing the templae on a folder that loses your settings to the same type as the source folder and see if your desired columns appear.

    Please post back with results.

It sounds like you want to set the Details view default column headings for folders that contain music files. If so, you can set the default for all folders of type Music by opening one folder that has the correct settings and then select View, Options, Change folder and search options, View, Apply to folders.

Alternatively, you can set the Music folder view defaults (and the defaults for all other File Explorer folder types) with WinSetView

Edit: Just saw KeithM's post. Like he said.
