Actually, this is for a friend. I know all about Quick Assist and think it rules, but what my friend needs is the ability to easily log into her home PC from anywhere in the world. That home PC would would always be ready for such a thing. It wouldn't 'fall asleep' or require anyone in her home to help her log in.
What is the name of this function and does Windows offer it?
If it's purely for personal use, use TeamViewer.
On the home PC set TeamViewer up to run in Host mode, i.e. always on, running and waiting for a remote connection. Use a decent password and she should be good to go.
I've been doing this exact same thing for years and it works brilliantly.

See the thing is she's a serious data cruncher person. So she's looking into a laptop with a ton of cores and RAM. But I'm concerned she's going to overwork the laptop and either melt it, tie it up when she wants to do other things, and destroy the battery. She lives alone and I'm like how about a Home PC doing that sciency-math stuff and an inexpensive laptop that can check in from no matter where she is.
