Windows Updated My Computer, Now It's Full of Bugs

I have a Lenovo ideapad 3.17 with Windows 10, version 2004, OS build 19041.1110 installed.

Yesterday, Microsoft 'helped' me by automatically installing an update. Now, my laptop is very buggy. Before the update, it was working great with no problems at all.

Not being a computer-savvy person, I will have to describe how it is now behaving in less-than-technical terms, so I hope this will be understandable.

The problem seems to have to do with the inability to select things and moving the cursor, as well as clicking on whatever I want to select, as well as having a cursor that just jump

    1. The cursor will ''grab" things on the desktop on its own, and won't let go, until I hit 'Esc.'
    2. I have to click twice, to select anything, even though my folder options and mouse settings are all set to one-click activation
    3. When I just move the mouse, it will highlight everything in its path.
    4. While typing, sometimes the words appear backwards.
    5. When I try holding down the left mouse button and then highlighting something, nothing happens.

I have tried setting the updates to stop installing any new updates until September, then went to 'System Restore,' but it won't let me restore the computer to a previous restore point.

I also tried updating the mouse drivers but was told that I already have to most up-to-date drivers.

Any suggestions would be so appreciated!

This calls for a in-place-restore. It will reset your windows installation but keeps all of your files intact. Just make a DVD with the media maker at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209 or https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=799445

You might wanna have a empty DVD or USB stick handy...

Btw, you have a kinda old Windows version.

If this is the Microsoft Surface we are talking about, are you using the attached Keyboard? If so, as an experiment, detach the keyboard and use the screen to navigate. Does that solve the problem? Is so, then either the keyboard didn't attach properly, or the keyboard driver needs updating.

Once you get this fixed be sure to disable updates.
These nagging updates offer no benefits, and they create lots of problems ... as you already know all too well!
I'm running version 1809. Three years with no updates. Three trouble-free years.

Hi Spunk. No, it's on a Lenovo laptop (Ideapad 3.17). Thanks for the offered help, though.

Okay, I just discovered something that may be of help: If I remove the mouse, then everything works fine, using the touchpad. Any ideas?

Hi RingTailCoon. Thanks for that info. I'm not sure that I could pull that off, being kind of an amateur, but it looks like a good thing to try. I just discovered that my laptop behaves just fine, if I remove the mouse in the 'Settings' menu. Does that give you any ideas as to how I might approach the program without having to try a full-blown in-place restore?

Try the mouse in another computer if possible.
Look in Reliability History for entries covering the faults and also Device Manager.
With the "faulty" mouse plugged in,run---dxdiag---which might give a report on any problems it may have.

Thanks for that info, Joe. Where is that 'Reliability History?' And how do I run 'dxdiag?' Like I said, I'm not real computer-savvy.

Try typing those in the search bar.

Searching is a good thing to do.

And if you are puzzled, use Google....

In the search box, bottom left, start typing in reliability and you should get an open prompt box which allows access.
Next,in the search box, type in dxdiag and it should open. There is a specific page covering the mouse, but have look through all the pages for your own information.

Hi Margrave. Thanks for your input. How do you go about disabling updates? I tried that, but they seem to just ignore me.
