Factory Reset After Windows 10 Upgrade

I have a small laptop running Windows 8 that I'd like to give to a friend after I install Windows 10. If I do a factory reset to remove all my stuff, will it retain Windows 10 or will it revert back to 8?

Factory Reset per se would mean it puts the operating system back to how it came out of the box - assuming you have never modified the partitions and the factory restore option is still intact. I would say the best bet (assuming you already have the personal data you want to preserve saved/backed up elsewhere) is to do factory reset, make sure the reset Win8 is activated for sure, and then you'll need to progress through the Win 10 upgrade. Once you have Win10 upgrade CONFIRMED as activated (no more product key needed as machine hardware ID is recorded on the Microsoft activation server), you may as well do a Win10 clean install, during which you delete ALL partitions on the HDD or SSD. Assuming YOU do the clean install, you can set up a local account and make sure its activated and then give your friend the password and they can take it from there.

Which exact operating system did the laptop come from the factory with?
