Run ---dxdiag--- and see if the Display page has any information.
Whilst there, note the driver version and download that version,or later if available, from the maker's site only.
Then uninstall the driver and install the new one. Driver corruption is a frequent cause of problems and is simple to eliminate as a possibility.
It might also be helpful to run---sfc /scannow---and ---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth---to fix any other file corruption.Time needed is minimal and no third party tool is necessary.
Good call. Checked all of that, nothing seemed wrong that I could tell. Sfc came up with some corrupted files to fix, but it didn't affect the Night light problem.
After that, I tested some drivers. Went through the process a few times with a few older versions, then started fresh: uninstalled fully, DDU Safe Mode, downloaded the newest driver from Nvidia (471.68), installed like I always do: driver, PhysX, and USBC only. Rebooted, Night light effect still comes on at login screen. So like I said, something in a recent Update triggered this, and nothing I can do from my end during install makes a difference.

I'm def going to change the title to "Night light effect", because at least we confirmed that's what's going on. But I'm still unsure of how to go about further diagnosing this. And, as I said, it's not a huge deal because I can "fix it" by checking the 'Override to reference mode' box in NV CP. Thanks to each of you for trying to help. This is such a great community, I can't say enough.

edit: oops, can't edit titles I guess. lol

    Just to update this.

Without changing display drivers, I did some more searching and found a suggestion to turn on Location services, then reboot and turn it off again, while double checking the Night Light schedule was set to off.

Now I'm not sure if that switch had anything to do with the scheduling option, but after rebooting I was able to turn scheduling "off", and it seems the issue is fixed. I.e. without having to have Nvidia Control Panel - Adjust desktop color settings - "Override to reference mode" box checked, the desktop does not default to Night light mode after rebooting.
