File explorrer keeps crashing as soon as I open it

Hello, my file explorer crashes after a few seconds of opening it. I open it and in just 3-5 seconds it closes and the task bar disappears for a 20-3 seconds and then it appears again.

    Any help would be appreciated

I appreciate you have only recently joined the site, but this as your computer spec
    Computer Type: PC/Desktop
    OS: Windows 10
as I am sure you will now realise, offers no detail on which to evaluate the basics of your system

Please complete some more detail and to save us both time - mention what you have tried to date to solve this problem.

In addition: history (so often omitted)
    - when did this start?
    - what happened before this started?

    Any software or hardware changes?

Have you done RAM and disk checks? Which?

    Does this still happen if
    - you disable non-MS shell extensions (context menu) using e.g. Shellexview (free)
    - you perform a clean boot (Google or see tutorial if unsure how).

    The forum prompted you thus:

    - so we don't have to keep asking. Thanks.

Run a full disk check that's the normal cause

and this video: Fixed - Windows 10 explorer keeps crashing Issue[2020] - YouTube

    It didn't work

    Thank you

You seem to have disregarded my post #3, so I can only wish you good luck.

I doubt it was disregarded, deliberately, I would think Micho - being a new member was somewhat overwhelmed by the three responses

Try what has been suggested and if no progress we can try other solutions
Another cause is often something hogging resources
What Anti Virus do you use and do you have any third party software that purports to manage the system for you

    It started yesterday suddenly.

Nothing happened, the only thing I did is delete %temp% files as I do occasionally to clear space

    No

Yes, this one: How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 - YouTube

    Does this still happen if
    - you disable non-MS shell extensions (context menu) using e.g. Shellexview (free)
    - you perform a clean boot (Google or see tutorial if unsure how).
    Yes it does.

I cannot install Shellexview, I downloaded it and clicked the .exe file but its not starting. Instead it opens a weird list of items I don't understand.

I did perform a clean boot.

    Already did that

NOTE: I noticed that when I remove my external hard drives the problem stops for a while (not sure if will continue after a time). As soon as I plug them in it crashes.

    Thank you for your reply.

Have you tried using a System Restore point created before that?

    Yes it does.

    If you look at
ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows

    you may see:

The ShellExView is a standalone executable. It doesn't require any installation process or additional DLLs. Just copy it to any folder you want, and run it.

If a program adds a context menu entry (the ones you see when rt clicking files and folders for example) this program lists them and lets you disable them so you don't see them in the context menu.

Sometimes they cause problems, and you can then find out which one, if any, is responsible.

    Example:
File explorrer keeps crashing as soon as I open it-untitled.png

Have you heard of Avast? It's an antivirus program. Can you see how I can disable its context menu entry? ShellExView can be used for solving context-menu problems in Explorer environment. For more information, read the following article: Fix: Slow Right Click and Explorer Crashes Caused by Shell Extensions

To disable all non-MS extensions simply select all (CTRL A) then rt click and click Disable.... (or click the little red button top left).
Most people don't have problems using Shellexview.

I did that and it looks like it worked. However now I cannot see some types of thumbnail previews in my file explorer. Like jpeg's and Photoshop. To me that is very important because I work with images a lot.
