Power setting turns display off as set but then it turns right back on

    Windows 10 version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.1110)

    I have a Dell Inspiron 7700 All-in-One computer.

I have the power setting set to turn off display in 10 minutes and the put the computer to sleep set to never.

After 10 minutes of no activity the screen turns off but then turns right back on.

I've unplugged my USB hub with no USB devices connected except my Logitech trackball and I'm not touching it or bumping the desk to cause the display to turn on. The only other USB device I have plugged in is my Microsoft keyboard.

Sadly, I have no way to turn the monitor off separately so it ends up staying on all the time. I worry it will damage my monitor over time.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem. Thanks! Verna

Do you have allow wake timers set to disabled ?

But you never put the PC to sleep, so it won`t be that.

Do you turn the PC off when you`re not using it ?

Boot into safe mode as Try3 has suggested.

I would also disconnect your track ball and plug in a normal usb mouse and see if it still comes right back on, if you haven`t tried that yet.

    Verna,

I think your first checks should be
    - Does this happen in other user accounts? [create a local one for test purposes if you do not already have one]
    - Does it happen in Safe mode? Boot into Safe Mode - TenForumsTutorials

If the first answer is No then your current user account has been corrupted.
If the answers are Yes & No then go to Dell Drivers & downloads, use your Dell Service tag and download another copy of the display driver then reinstall it even if it is the same version as the one you already have.
If the answers are Yes & Yes then I think you should disconnect both the trackball & the keyboard to see if one of them is the cause.

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month so I can benefit from Excel's filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial pages are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

    - And note that you can also search TenForums threads [rather than just searching tutorials] in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
[This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

You said you don't touch the trackball or bump the table, so it could be a ghost movement on the trackball. I know when my screen goes off, it sometimes comes back on, and it was because my mouse would somehow trigger it. Have you disabled "mouse can wake PC"?

Gosh, thanks for all the suggestions. I have discovered that it's the wireless Microsoft keyboard. It's even preventing the screen saver from working. I'm going to reinstall the drivers and see if that helps. When I first set up the system all worked fine, this is a new problem as of a few days ago.

Also, here is a screen capture of the advanced settings on my computer under power options and I don't have all the settings showing on AddRam's settings. Is there another way to access those other than under Settings > System > Power and Sleep and then the advanced settings under the power plan?

I'm a newbie to Windows 10 and still finding my way around. Thanks, Verna

    Verna,

    See

I use the Control Panel to get to Power Options, not Settings.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I'm afraid no matter how I get there all I have are what I uploaded. I don't have options for Wireless Adapter Settings, USB settings, etc. That's OK. I won't worry about it for now. I reinstalled the keyboard drivers and that seems to have solved the original problem so I'm a happy camper! Many thanks for all your help!!! Verna

    Verna,

"I don't have options for Wireless Adapter Settings, USB settings, etc"

I've told you how to add them - see post 6. There's a whole string of tutorials - one for each addable entry.

I did review the info you sent in Post 6 but even adding the dimmed display brightness didn't give me all the other options that AddRam had in his screen shot. I do appreciate your help though! Many thanks!
